Forums - Sales - Eurogamer: Wii still over PS2 in sales

I love how people just don't give the Wii the respect it deserves. Here are a few facts that people completly over look.

1) The PS2 was the 1st, 6th Generation Console to be released. It had a Year and 1 Month sales lead on either Xbox or the GameCube. The PS2 had absolutly no competition againt it. Thats one reason why it's numbers are so high.

2) The Wii on the other hand was released at the same time as the PS3, 1 Year after the 360. We are talking about a Console that was way behind in technology, and had 2 current Generation Consoles to contend with. And was still able to outsell them. Theres no wonder the Wii cant catch up to the PS2 sales, the PS2 had a massive advantage. But even seeing the Wii knock at the PS2's door is absolutly amazing, thats what makes it.....in my opinion.....the greatest console ever made.

Agreed, at least on the part where people don't give Wii enough respect. Wii came in with a million advantages and wiped the floor with its competition. On top of that, it was criticized to no end by the gaming press and, far more importantly, third parties, and still made a mockery out of its competition for over three years. Sure, it's fallen like a rock recently, but people still seem to try to make it sound like a failure, which would be amusing had it not been such a popular belief.

I don't, however, think that a console's greatness can be necessarily judged by raw sales, even if they are the most objective way of doing so.

That graph would have been completely different had they dared use software revenue rather than total game units sold.

Tease.

It doesn't matter who buys the Wii. A console sold is a console sold. It's as simple as that. That is just a common phrase amongst the Wii haters to justify it's sales.

So, you can make excuses to justify the PS2's sales, but people who do it to the Wii are haters?

Completly different, it's a simple fact that PS2 had no compitition. And thats why it sold. You cannot say "Non gamers bought the Wii so it doesn't count" It's fact vs speculation. I am a gamer and i have a PS3 and a Wii.....so my Wii purchase doesn't count ?

Can anyone quote me where i said it is the greatest console because of the units sold ?

Sales does not make it the greatest console ever made.

The Wii is only so popular because it's target audience ISN'T the typical hardcore gamer.

While I do think it is underrated by hardcore gamers because they say "it's just a kids console", it still doesn't deserve the sales just because it's the latest trendy Christmas present.

Partly false, its market doesn't have have typical hardcore gamers, because 3rd parties chose to not bring those games over.

Had the first years of the Wii been given the same 3rd party games with only losses to HD visuals, Wii would gained the core gamer as well.

However, 3rd parties were short sighted in the beginning and then decided to not spend the money to make their engines Wii friendly as they were comfortable with PS360/PC userbase and created their own self-fulling logic of who the Wii market was and was not.

Nintendo encourage this though, although they might have came out with a great Zelda or Mario game, they blanked their hardcore fans and tried to sell their console to grandparents.

With Nintendo putting such underpowered hardware into the Wii, this encouraged it even further. Who cares about graphics? ...Hardcore gamers. Who doesn't care about graphcis? ...Casual gamers.

It isn't just down to the 3rd party developers, Nintendo's goal from the start was to sell the Wii to the casual gamer.

How is it completely different?

PS2 had no competition, so even if it sold more it doesn't really count.

Wii had no competition in the casual market, yet selling about 57% of the current PS2 total makes it 'the greatest console ever made'?

You really don't see the hypocrisy here?  If someone had a PS2 and a Gamecube are you saying their PS2 purchase didn't count?

You are directly referring to sales as the reason why, in your opinion, the Wii is the greatest console ever made.

I rest my case =).

Dude what have you been reading ? I never said PS2 sales don't count. I said the reason the Wii wont catch up is because PS2 had no competition.

And i never said sales made it the greatest console.

Read a little slower, and understand what i am writing !
