Some people keep saying it will kill the PSP - but why should it? If anything, I would think that the ability to share save files (and so play a game on a console, continue it on a handheld, then go back to play it on the console) should encourage some PSP purchases - at least for long games.

if you dont already own the game on psp, would that mean you would have to buy for both the ps3 and psp to use the interchangable saves feature?

My guess is yes, though it's just a guess... That IS a problem with this model that otherwise encourages the buying of both the console and the handheld. . Maybe there would be some deals where if you get both you get a certain discount, but for this to work, imo it would have to be a considerable discount..
