Sounds promising, but as always, more data is needed!

Why the fuck did they feel the need to translate "years" into "turtle lives"? What fucking country uses that as a metric? Was there anybody here that said "330,000 years? I don't know how long that is! Oh wait, good they put it into turtle lives, now I understand."

You can find me on facebook as Markus Van Rijn, if you friend me just mention you're from VGchartz and who you are here.

Also strange considering turtles don't really have traditional lifespans.

Once they hit maturity they just stop aging and only die from illness or injury... and we really have no way of measuring how old a turtle lives on average.

"However, there’s hope. Say, for instance, that we were able to develop the technology to travel at light speed–not only would it be amazingly badass, but it would allow us to reach plant in a mere 20 years (roughly how long it takes a human to become educated…space school, anyone?)."

Time does not work that way.

If you travelled at light speed from here to Gliese, do you know how much time would have passed for those who were looking forward to 20 years of space school? 0 seconds! This how how we can detect muons in mines many km under the surface, and is the basis of the twin paradox.

Also, "has the potential to be warm and wet enough to nurture Earth-like life" =/= "can support life."

You beat me to it. I'm not very familiar with this science, but the nearer we get to light speed, the slower time becomes until the point we reach light speed, where time essentially stops, correct?

playing right now: Xenoblade Chronicles

Hype-o-meter, from least to most hyped:  the Last Story, Twisted Metal, Mass Effect 3, Final Fantasy XIII-2, Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Playstation ViTA

bet with Mordred11 that Rage will look better on Xbox 360.

I just wanted to say that we are getting worse at naming planets.

Gliese 581?

George Lucas is wayyyyyyyy better at naming planets!

I know.  I think that the people naming these planets are fans of Gene Roddenberry.

Looks like it. Best posts of the thread right here.

Essentially you are right, but you can't reach the speed of light (if you have mass).

Hit the nail on the head. Additionally, the amount of force required to accelerate the ship by a certain amount increases by exactly the same factor as time is slowing down by, so actually accelerating to 98% of the speed of light requires phenomenal amounts more effort than accelerating to 49%

Yes, because this totally isn't the first "OMG we can live on Earthlike planet" situation. And we can totally travel at the speed of light (unless you're on some sort of wicked diet to achieve negative mass). Oh, and we totally wouldn't overpopulate and overpollute such a planet within mere decades if we did somehow colonize it.

“These are my principles; if you don’t like them, I have others.” – Groucho Marx

A runaway greenhouse effect seems likely, considering the ammount of water vapour and other gases such a high gravity planet should keep. Even if it isn't, with no tectonics it would probably be covered in a single ocean, hundreds of miles deep.

Sorry, but Mars sounds earthlier than that to me.

Once again, light has defeated us in the space race.

So then, that would mean that the light from the planet that we currently see is not current, it is 20 years old, which means we see the planet as it appeared 20 years ago (time travel is possible, hooray!!!). For all we know, by now a giant comet could have smashed into the planet, deeming it lifeless.

All hope is lost.

Been away for a bit, but sneaking back in.

Gaming on: PS4, PC, 3DS. Got a Switch! Mainly to play Smash
