Forums - Sony - PS3 Fan going balistic...its make or break time...

Last February, my 40gig PS3's fan started shifting to high after only 15 min of play. I'm not really surprised as the weather as of late has been unforgivingly hot! Yesterday, the other day I manage to get a Move wand and eye for around $65. So, now with two wands, I tried playing the Raquet sports demo with my son and after just 5 mins. the fan just didnt shift to high, it went balistic! you know the sound and speed of the fan when you do the fan test trick on the 40gig PS3 fat models? well, thats how loud the fan was!

So, i've had enough of the damn loud fan and am gonna open up my PS3 tonight and see if there's anything I can do about it. I know i'm no technician but what the hey LOL. I'd send it in for repairs but here in the Philippines, Sony centers only accept the Slim models since the PS3 was only officially launched here when the slim was released. (bunch of ass retards!) I'd try to get some other profesional help but then again, most of the people here who repair PS3s are not really trained and are most likely also self taught..

if this doesn't work or if the problem persists I think I'll try modding the case., maybe cutting a hole under the PS3's case and elevating it while having another external fan aimed under it to increase airflow or something.

Here goes nothing...

I expected something totally different.... but good luck with it!

From the title, I thought this would be a new Chad Warden video.

You're supposed to replace the thermal paste on teh C3LL and the GPU. Do a google search to figure out how to do that in detail, but I remember you have to make sure the paste does not touch the motherboard.

After that, I hear putting a can (any metal cylinder, really) under each corner of the PS3 to elevate it helps by improving heat dispersion. Placing it vertically also helps slightly.

Awesome! Good luck.

i read it as "ps3 fans going balistic ... it's make or break time." and was  also surprised by the threads content.

misleading title is .. not misleading with proper reading comprehension ...  i fail.

I knew it would be about Fans in ps3s not supporters of the ps3 name.

PS One/2/p/3slim/Vita owner. I survived the Apocalyps3/Collaps3 and all I got was this lousy signature.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

Ok. so, ive opened it up and cleaned the gpu and cell and now looks like this

so, cleaned off al the old thermal compound. also looked up some tutorials and faqs online on how to apply thermal compound. it mostly says to remove all the old compound which by the way looks really crisp. then to aply the new compound as eavenly as possible all the while avoiding to get some on the mainboard (good luck with that :P ).

so, i'm now attempting to apply the thermal compound. I got something that said nano silver, whatever that means. i went with the more expensive one which was about $3.50 for a small tube with iduno 5ml or less? it was either that or the one that cost $1.50 for a small tube.

hopefully this helps.

my mate would bring his ps3 over when he sleeps over my house somtimes when he comes over on the weekends and we would set up 2 tvs next to each other and play our ps3s all day long and after about 1 hr of him playing on his ps3 the fan would go psycho but he doesnt really care and the first time i herd his ps3 go crazy i was like WTF DUDE UR PS3 IS GONA EXPLODE!!! WTFFF then he sais it does this all the time and it doesnt bother him. when hes over we basicly play ps3 from when we get up till we go to bed at like 12am (i know lol...we often joke how no life we are and my mom allways tells us to go outside) sooo for hours his ps3 is going nuts but it doesnt seem to break

well, it didnt really bother me much. but the new span speed i'm hearing is just awful! but then again, the good news is, the ps3 isnt shutting down due to overheating. Probably means there's still some room for more heat LOL
