RROD cost consumers the full price of their product and caused them to be replaced or repurchased. PSN is only an online issue. There is no equal nature to the two aside from personal information being in jeopardy. RROD was far worse because it tarnished Microsofts name when it came to creating and overall quality product. Everyone knew Sony was weaker when it came to online than Microsoft, but they are learning. Most PSN games are a variety of titles with strong single player experiences, so really this shouldn't be a huge blow to PS3 owners unless they are multiplayer fanatics. In that case, those would obviously be the ones jumping ship to the 360 like everyones talking about. If its about playing games then this is just an issue that will pass with time.

No. Not in most cases at least.

To summarize this topic:
RROD is worse because PSN is just an online problem, no biggie, oh and yeah, personal info was being stolen but hey I'm too young to have a credit card anyway so it isn't a big problem for anyone.

You know it isn't that simple. If your PS3 broke down with YLOD chances are it was out of pocket. If your Xbox 360 broke down with RROD chances are it wasn't out of pocket. Also because the Xbox 360 had horrible failure rates doesn't mean that the early PS3 failure rates were not also pretty horrible, I think >15% in some survey vs 40% is still quite a large number. Beyond this the number of people effected by having their online service down is pretty big, 70% of PS3s are connected to PSN and X number of SOE people can't play their MMOs and PSP owners can't access PSN either. I still think PSN outage is worse. |
Considering XBL Gold is 60 bucks a year now at most, I think it's safe to assume that having to go days/weeks without a console ENTIRELY while it is broken is far worse than not being able to access online for a month. Buying a new console and waiting days/weeks to be able to play it is far more costly than simply not being able to access online features. A month without WoW is $15 -- a week without a console while having to buy a new console is $300 plus.
Having your console break is much worse for the individual. On the other hand, as far as amount of people affected and on the industry as a whole (consumers and developers) I agree the PSN outage is far worse.

They're actually hard to compare, being each is a totally different scenario. PSN outage affects all owners but - relative to RROD - is very short term. RROD affected smaller groups of customers at a time over a very long period.
RROD was purely self created issue, a result IMHO of MS rushing the 360 to market instead of taking longer and producing a better piece of electronics.
PSN is a purely external issue (FYI I don't hold with all the "asking for it" crap. Hacking anything is a choice) and no down to Sony directly themselves.
If I had to try and generalize then RROD was perhaps worse in that - probably - it cost MS more than PSN will cost Sony, it was self generated and therefore less tolerable from the company itself from a consumer perspective.
Looking at PS3/360 sales I don't think (unless PSN remains down for months) I'm not convinced either RROD or PSN will have hugely affected demand for the consoles themselves that much.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

RROD - Possibly MS's fault for rushing hardware design.
PSN hack - Possibly Sony's fault for rushing network design.
While I agree that the PSN hack is not only due to Sony, I don't think the distinction is as big as you painted it.

360s failrate is far worse, no question, no one is going to lose anything because of Sonys protection plan (assuming anything even happens) and it wasn't even close to the largest in history stop buying into media bs, also the psn issue will last what a month at most, it took MS 5 years to redesign the 360 and even their 3 year warentee only covered about half of all failures
Since I never play console games online or use the PSN store at all its not really a problem for me but I can't speak for everyone, of course.
I still think that a hardware fault that kills the entire console, sometimes people experience that several consoles die, is a lot worse than downtime on servers and services.
This thread smells like a fanboy war waiting to happen (if it hasn't already). It won't be long before I see Nsanity and maybe Selnor, Seece and Disolitude post here (I haven't read the other pages). Both are bad in their own way. RROD was a problem that lasted years and I believe that should have gotten more media coverage, but Microsoft is the sweetheart of the USA (although the hicks don't seem to realize the consoles are made in China). The PSN being down is a temporary problem to varying degrees solely dependant on the user. The service isn't a paid service like Live so that mitigates some of it. Personally I jump between being in online and offline mode. Right now I bought Killzone 1! So I went back and played that (love my MGS4 80gb b/c bundle hehe). Also playing Lords of Shadow.
P.S. Disolitude if you take the time to read this, you should give Lords of Shadow another chance. It does feel like a Castlevania game as you get deeper in. I understand your love for 2D Castlevania and trust me, I have 2 versions of SOTN but LoS stands well on its own. When you get to the vampire area it truly feels more and more Castlevania'ish, it just has that charm to it. 2 Hours into LoS does not do the whole game justice trust me. I personally thought Lament of Innocence was good for a 3D Castlevania but LoS does well on its own if you give it a fair shake. Don't go in with your Alucard SOTN bias and truly give it a fair shake man, I guarantee you will find the charm within a few hours. Not to mention it is a lengthy game. I guess you can compare it to Nier, the beginning was meh, but later on the game stretches its wings.
Make games, not war (that goes for ridiculous fanboys)
I may be the next Maelstorm or not, you be the judge http://videogamesgrow.blogspot.com/ hopefully I can be more of an asset than a fanboy to VGC hehe.
