Now as I said in a prior thread I'm not going to speculate on rumours or judge Nintendo's console before the facts are out. However the whole 8-gig of internal memory got me thinking of something cool Nintendo could do. Nintendo could launch interchangable hard drives similiar to the 360's old hard drives.
Nintendo could launch their next console with 8-gig internal memory good for only game saves. This internal hard drive would focus exclusively on game saves and Mii's and pictures. Channels would also be added on this hard drive. Things like the Nintendo channel, photo channel , news channel, NetFlix.
But Nintendo would launch a interchangable hard drive possibly 120-gig , 500-gig , terabyte. This hard drive would be connected to your system. This hard drive would be synced to your My Nintendo account. You would use this hard drive to download DLC and Virtual Console/ CafeWare games. You could remove your drive and bring it to a friends house to play your VC/CafeWare games and DLC there.
You would not be able to put your games on your internal memory, you would not be able to copy your games to another drive. The drive would act essentially like your own home console. If your drive broke you could send it to Nintendo for repairs or for a new one. They would transfer your games over and you'd get your drive back to continue playing.
I think this would solve many problems. People who buy a second Cafe would be able to bring their hard drive back and fourth enabling them to play their DLC and VC games anywhere their is a console. It would also mean if Nintendo launched a new model people wouldn't loose all of their online content.
I think Nintendo could improve where Microsoft failed with their hard drives. Not to mention it would help Nintendo keep the hardware price down. Nintendo would be selling the drive seperatly for maybe 60-120$ for the 120-gig through terabyte. Plus with GameCube games probably on their way to VC it would give gamers enough room to download tons of them.
Not to mention Nintendo would sell the console with the little 8-gig internal memory to everyone. So people with no intention of downloading content wouldn't have to pay for the bigger hard drive. With the 360 you could buy the basic model with no internal memory or the one with 20-gig. Nintendo would essentially come out inbetween with enough memory to make the console operational and capable of running at optimal levels while offering consumers the option to get a hard drive for online content.
What do you think, wouldn't that be a cool idea?
