I don't think that Zelda OOT 3D alone will give 3DS high steady sales. I do think it will do something else though.
Zelda OOT 3D should start off a healthy and steady flow of game releases which in return will cause 3DS sales to stay decently high. Iwata has already said that they plan to have a steady flow of games on 3DS and I think Zelda will kick it off. After E3 I expect the games to start coming and sales to increase.
Zelda OOT 3D, Cave Story 3D, Resident Evil The Mercenaries 3D, Starfox 64 3D, Kid Icarus Uprising, Paper Mario 3D, and even Mario Kart 3D should all come out during the Summer.

Mario Kart 3DS would have been awesome if it could have made of use of both the 3D and the motion controls. Same goes for Star Fox.

"so expensive while having ancient touchscreen tech all while at the same time having features that work against each other"
It launched at the same price as PSP was 6 years ago, I generally use my finger for the touchscreen in most cases and the motion control is obviously going to be used sparingly, when 3D graphics are a priority in MOST games being developed.
Besides, having motion controls makes 3DS games more easily ported to the PSP2, I wouldn't be complaining.
About your Zelda question, core gamers are gonna buy the shit out of that console when it releases, but more importantly, the following 12 months will keep the ball rolling with RE, MGS, etc. People saying that one game will do everything is a little like people assuming Sonys lack of a handheld MH exclusivity will keep that console, and the NGP, from being a success. Neither statement is true.
“When we make some new announcement and if there is no positive initial reaction from the market, I try to think of it as a good sign because that can be interpreted as people reacting to something groundbreaking. ...if the employees were always minding themselves to do whatever the market is requiring at any moment, and if they were always focusing on something we can sell right now for the short term, it would be very limiting. We are trying to think outside the box.” - Satoru Iwata - This is why corporate multinationals will never truly understand, or risk doing, what Nintendo does.

Bolded #1.
PSP was expensive 6 years ago.
Bolded #2.
Touching a restrictive touch screen is not close to the same as doing so on a capacitive.
Bolded #3.
Not according to Nintendo.

As for the rest, we won't know until the summer.

Not according to Nintendo. Nintendo is saying this because they don't want to exclude devs from their console, not because its actually going to be true. They are pushing a new "standard", just like they pushed analogue control sticks, rumble packs and motion controls. They're showing confidence by launching a brand new console, with a brand new technology, and they're trying to change the way we play. |

#1.) My wages now compared to what it was in 2005 still make a $250 handheld pretty expensive.
#2.) I know the difference and it is noticable. On the DS your finger feels resistance when sliding it up, down, left and right. On my Captivate smartphone there is none what so ever. Well, it is actually there but very very little, much less than then DS screen. Maybe you're right though, they won't notice. I just know that I would much rather prefer capacitive.
#3.) You could be right, but why put 3D if your making a motion title? Seasickness simulator?
You think that would sell? I bet some people actually would buy it.

the right game(s) could definitely help 3DS sales but this isn't it. this game was on the N64, GC, and Wii. maybe a 1 week boost but even that probably won't be all that substantial.
also, i don't think the 3DS sales is entirely game related. 3D is really cool to some but a lot of the people i've talk to just don't care much or worse yet ... actively dislike it.
If the 3DS is outsold heavily by the DS this holiday season, then the 3DS is doomed. By then Mario Kart and Super Mario 3DS would have been released, this will truly show that the mass consumer thinks this is part of the DS line. That is unless it's heavily advertised, then again that might not help but help the DS making people believe thats what Nintendo advertised seeing how they would not go for the most expensive DS.

You're confusing the difference behind the material they're using to make the touchscreen with the different screen mechanics.
Having that "resistance" has nothing to do with being capacitive or not. You probably didn't have a smartphone back before they started using capacitive screens, but they used the same type of glass they use nowadays (at least, the HTC ones that I had did). The phones back then were also designed to use a stylus, but the screens themselves (unless they had a screen protector on them) felt the same as the phones today.
The reason the DS and 3DS screens feel the way they do is because Nintendo designed them to take a beating from 5-year-old kids pushing way too hard with a stylus. Your average touchscreen phone has never been built with that in mind.
