Forums - Sony - PS3 users are you thinking of switching to a Xbox 360?

You are making a couple of fairly egregious assumptions, no offense:

1)  IF you don't know how the sampling was done, than jumping to the conclusion that it was done, NOT randomly, is, well...I'm just not sure how you make that jump without introducing personal bias (ie, I dont like what it said, so I don't *think* it was random, so it wasn't).

2)  If the survey was ONLY looking for PS3 owners responses your second point would make sense, but that was not all that was reported, so limiting it to PS3 owners would invalidate the other items on the survey.

I'm cool with people not liking the survey, but trying to invalidate the survey, with statements like "it wasn't random" or "they didn't use enough people" wihtout sound, valid reasons for saying those things, well that is the definition of introducing bias into a response.

1. You must know that must surveys are never truly random so it is an easy assumption to make. I do have a bias just like you just it has weakened over the past months for Sony, I dont care I have my reasons.

2. Perhaps, I should of read the original article.

Your only doing the opposite bro by assuming it is random when in in reality surveys are not random because you cannot control for a bias the group will bring. Without control it is subject to alot more error.

Sorry, but you are assuming that I support this survey, when in fact in my original post I stated I was not a proponent of the survey.  I have NO idea how it was run so can niether confirm nor deny it's validity.

I'm only stating that the arguments I've seen against it's validity (including yours, sorry), have been fundamentally flawed, IMO.

A lot of people in this thread believe that it's not that important but just because you play single only games doesn't mean that it's not important. I have so many friends that play mainly online games like COD and since the PSN is down they can't anymore. There are people that are not so loyal to consoles and they rather play games than play a specific console, if they can't play anymore they get pissed and it's normal.

I mostly play online too but as I don't have a PS3 I would be pissed too. Would this be enough to make me switch console? I don't think so but I would consider getting the competition for the online part that's for sure.

I'm not sure that many people on this sight understand the concept of random sampling of large populations and the associated error and confidence level.

I'm not supporting the original survey, as I don't know the particulars of how it was conducted, but a 2100 sample size is actuallly not that bad.  It is also significantly more accurate (to multiple magnitudes) than responses culled from a PS3 heavy fanbase (ie VGChartz).

That being said, even if the sample was done with statistically sound methods with high confidence in an acceptable error rate, there is no indication that the survey looked for INTENT to switch, rather simply that the concerns over the PSN breach made them consider a switch.

I am rather surprised by the number of people who say they don't care, or don't play online that much though; my PS3 has always admittedly been my secondary system, so not using the PSN for me, is understandable.  For those who it IS the primary/favored system though, I'm shocked at the number that seem to not care the on-line is down.

To be honest, if this was Live that was down, I'd pissed.  One or two days, who cares...>1 week?  Yep, I'd be pissed.

This is what nobody is taking into account, if you have a PS3 and had give a though about changing (look into the other console game library, analyze price and benefits), your answer to the survey will be in that 21%. Now, it doesn't mean that you are going to do it, only that the problem make you think about it, and that is bad publicity for Sony.

More regular gamers, not ones found in forums, don't know a lot about the excellent game library of the console for the rest of the year and only care if they can play Black Ops or Madden Online, nothing else.

1. PSN will be back up this week

2. The only thing people should be worrying about it accounts. If u have PSN check ur accounts ur cards are attached to or get a credit check.

3. PS3 owners really dont need to worry about online as much as Xbox 360 owners. If Xbox Live isnt on, the 360 is barely worth turning on imho (unless you have kinect or some home party game as you can avert online party gaming). The PS3 has a healthier variety of exclusives ranging from single player to multiplayer, to level building and creation titles which include online.

4. Have fun and get immersed in a deep single player storyline with a PS3 exclusive this year and then enjoy the multiplayer of various titles. The 360's main exclusive will own the online for the rest of this year despite its storyline (notice i say despite, because usually on PS3 exclusive titles the storyline has a clear balance with the multiplayer).

No. I sold my 360 because there's nothing coming out that interests me; the last game I bought was Bayonetta, but the PS3 version isn't bad at all once you install it.

Microsoft just thought on the short-term. They were just interested in getting the PS2 userbase to upgrade to a 360 by buying timed exclusives, DLCs, multiplats, etc from popular series that were on the PS2 that they forgot what they're going to offer their users in the future. Just look at it now.  360 doesn't really have any exclusives coming out aside from Gears 3, Forza 4 and some kinect games, and a lot of the 360 'exclusives' were released for the PS3. They should have purchased or created some game studios instead, imo. Sony did think on the long-term; PS3 has a plethora of first party games coming out this year and a healthy 3rd party support.

No, not at all. I'm just waiting for PSN to get back up so I can play my games online and talk with friends. I'm waiting on Uncharted 3, Infamous 2, and Resistance 3 to be released anyways, so I really don't need one.

nope, ive had a 360 and switched to PS3 and won't be going back. I cant see why some PSN outage would make you switch to another console, you'd have to be addicted to online gaming to consider switching. Infact last saturday i even recieved a FREE Xbox360 slim with Kinect and Kinect sports and Kinect adventures for absolutely nothing brand new(Upgraded my contract phone and got it as free gift), and i sold it £150 to someone at work, so that would have been the perfect time to switch back for me but didn't.

Yeah, I mean... that is an issue.  You'd be going to 360... where you have to pay for online anyway.

So not only am I now paying $30 a month (or whatever it costs)  Sony still has my info, which they can lose at any time.

Most of the games I want are exclusive to PS3 (Last Guardian, FF V 13, Ni no Kuni, WKC2, Tales of Graces F, etc. (persumably)).  The 360 has exactly zero games I'm looking forward to at this point.  I'm a single player guy, not an online guy.  I had a 360 that broke out of warranty and haven't replaced yet.

There probably are a good number of people that own a PS3 and all they play is Call of Duty.  They are probably the main culprit that want to switch.

That being said, I will probably buy a new one for Lost Odyssey and Tales of Vesperia when the next price drop happens.

"Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, IT IS THE LEADERS of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is TELL THEM THEY ARE BEING ATTACKED, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. IT WORKS THE SAME IN ANY COUNTRY."  --Hermann Goering, leading Nazi party member, at the Nuremberg War Crime Trials
