Forums - Nintendo - The Wii is not dead or dying.

It's dying Since the Wii2 has been confirmed but there is alot of great games to still be released to the Wii like The Legand of Zelda:Skyward Sword,Xenoblade and The Last Story so it's far from being dead.

"Im just going by your title saying that the Wii is not dead or dying which it clearly is.  Depressed sales numbers, abandoning 3rd party support, limited first party support...all sounds like a system that is alive and kicking all right.."

That still doesn't relate to the point I was giving.

Oh, and third parties never gave the Wii an honest chance, so, as I've stated already on this thread, that isn't saying much.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.

Plus, just for the hell of it: Kelly Brook at the 2008 BAFTAs

I agree.

People who think Nintendo is dying:

1. Nintendo haters. Ignore them. They were wrong about DS and Wii and they still don't understand what is happening today.

2. Nintendo fans. Have you been following Malstrom, and noticed how much he is speaking for a lot of Nintendo fans? People who bought into the DS in 2005 and the Wii in 2006 because they were excited about Nintendo's old school direction now feel betrayed and are depressed about the future of gaming.

3. Nintendo themselves. Read between the lines. It starts with Nintendo's 2008 holiday lineup bombing. Their public behavior since then has been erratic, most notably and most recently with the too-early Project Cafe announcement. This is not the confident E3 2006 Nintendo who know they are about to take the world by storm. This is a Nintendo who have been shocked by the failure of Wii Music, Animal Crossing Wii, Mario Galaxy 2, Other M, Choo Choo Zelda, and low early 3DS sales, and now don't know what the hell is going on. It's just going to get worse when Ocarina doesn't help 3DS sales, and Waggle Puzzle Zelda sells less than Doggie Zelda.

So ignore the haters, by all means. But don't ignore the former early adopters who aren't buying 3DS and think Cafe sounds lame, and don't ignore Nintendo's own behavior.

"[Our former customers] are unable to find software which they WANT to play."
"The way to solve this problem lies in how to communicate what kind of games [they CAN play]."

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo President. Only slightly paraphrased.

The SNES was also sold well after the N64 came out. And the handhelds were all supported when the next came along, because they were all hits.

True, but SNES had a stronger and more rounded out library than N64. It also had some pretty good support years into N64s launch. Japan also played a big role. SNES sold 17 million units in Japan, N64 only sold like 5 million.

Wii is definitely on a decline. Price cuts will help sales, but 3rd party software is getting abysmal. Wii may not be dead, but it sure does feel like its dying.

Decline doesn't mean dying. And 3rd parties have made themselves abysmal even when the system was selling loads, so that doesn't prove anything either way.

And it seem those declaring it's dying are those that didn't like the system anyway, so you're just spouting wishful thinking, not reality.

I'm not saying the Wii will be out of the picture soon per se. But its obviously becoming less and less relevant. In that sense, yeah its dying. The masses are intrigued by HD platforms now and NIntendo's will be out in about a year.

Trust me, its not wishful thinking. I didn't go out and buy a Wii because I want it to be dead. I'm just not in denial.

Overlapping support is a simple matter of cost/profit per unit. Both the NES and SNES were successful enough to warrant low cost redesigns that stayed on the market well into the next generation.

It may not get the best support once Project Cafe is available, but Nintendo will keep it as a low cost legacy system, possibly for as low as $99.

And yes, it is dying a natural death based upon a 5 year development cycle. Only die hard Nintendo fans would be in denial over this.

The latter point bears further emphasis. It's the end of the console's lifespan because it's the end of the console's lifespan, software emphasis has moved on to the newer platform(s), which is to the Wii's detriment, but there it is

I am seriously getting angry about these premature pronouncements over Skyward Sword. This judgmental style is going to stop.

Doesnt look dead to me.

I think it's more about the game lineup and how it hasn't had many (any?) interesting games released for a pretty long time, nor does it have many (again, any?) coming out in the near future

The sales are in decline so it's debatably "dying". If the new Nintendo console is designed to cater more towards the core gamer as is rumoured then I can see them keeping the Wii as their entry level console for a few more years yet and having it so all peripherals and games are compatible with the new console.

Really, it all depends on how well they support the Wii in the next few years, especially after the new console is released.
