This could mean a lot for Sony as a whole and maybe an indication for future plans of the PS4 having a strong emphasis digital distribution

Interezting!
“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
- George Orwell, ‘1984’
the company is owned by an super-annuation fund (money for retirement, big in Australia, they own alot of mining companies shares). being so, they will most likely sell.
On SONY's side, this would be interesting moving into the PC gaming DD space dominated by Valve but even smaller share companies are making huge profits. I would like to see them buy this, and create an large Steam like service that services PC titles as well as NGP titles as well, with also PSN intergrated.
Of Course That's Just My Opinion, I Could Be Wrong
I've said it before and i'll say it again. I don't support piracy but if developers don't allow me to buy physical copies of games then i'll will fall to the other side. Buying a file off of the internet is not owning anything to me.

I don't think anyone ever denied this, a VERY small minority at best. The argument I recall was that some people think physical media will be gone altogether in the very near future when it seems more probable for both physical and digital media to coexist.

It's happening whether we like it or not. You don't really need the disk to own the data, just like you don't really need printed money to have money in your account...(maybe not)...
As huge amount of data are getting increasingly easier to store and transmit, the need for physical delivery of a storage medium disapears. It's the same thing, you just don't buy a disk with it.
It's a bit scary too if you think about it.

go to your wallet and pull out all your money. guess what, that is excatly what downloading an file is like. You dont really own what backing that note or coin of yours but you still get the rewards of having that note.
I would also like to point out when you buy an box of an game, or an movie or an song etc. You do not OWN that song, game, movie etc. You own an cover and an disk with that media on it. This is the diference between media and say an car or an tv where once you buy it, you OWN it and can do what you want with it. Media is difference because you cant go an reproduce that media an sell it as your own, but with an car you can reband it as an Wagram Automobile an sell it.
Media is an whole different story when it comes to owning it, So cutting out the box and the disk doesn't affect you using that game, song or movie.
But if Movies, songs and games are to move all DD in the future, then the prices better go down.

I don't think they will. Games on PSN for example are still full price and they came out a year or years ago. There is no room for competition for better prices.

That's the thing I'm most worried about. As it is now you can always find someone reselling games for cheaper than retail but if there is no one to drive the price down price cuts will become a thing of the past.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

I don't think it's the fact whether it's actually owning the piece of property or not. It's rather the fact that a lot of people like having the physical piece of property (Bluray discs are tough and are hard to damage) because of its reliability. With the digital format, there are many things that could go wrong that could make you end up losing your game. A company could take down the game off the digital service and you could lose everything on the hard drive, which would mean you can't download it again and can't play the game anymore, which is just one example. With the physical copy, you don't have to worry about anything like that happening.
