It's happening whether we like it or not. You don't really need the disk to own the data, just like you don't really need printed money to have money in your account...(maybe not)...

As huge amount of data are getting increasingly easier to store and transmit, the need for physical delivery of a storage medium disapears. It's the same thing, you just don't buy a disk with it. 

It's a bit scary too if you think about it.
