Forums - Sony - SONY: PS3 over 50m units sold and 8m MOVE units sold.

Focusing on shipped...

Wii is ~90m

360 is ~54m

PS3 is ~50m

Not a bad console market. Wii should still easily break 100m and probably die off around 120m.

Other two will probably die off around 80m with PS3 potentially having a small lead.

This means last gen was about 200m sold total while this one will creep up on 300m. Very nice for the entire market.

The hardware sales will be nice but software is still somewhat disastrous potentially:

Nintendo's console history for software is:

500m -> 380m --> 225m --> 210m ---> 1.2b (guess for Wii)

Sony's is something like this:

960m --> 1.58b ---> 800m (guess for PS3)

My guess for Microsoft is something like this:

225m ---> 750m (X360)

The HD market for sw may only be 1.6b, after being 1.6b on PS2 alone in SD, and 1.2b on Wii alone with HD games at double the cost or more to make. Thats effectively 1.8b from PS2 & Xbox / 250k  to 1.6b to PS3 & X360 at double development costs, akin to 1.8b / 250k profitable games (7200)  vs. 1.6b / 500k profitable games (3200). Third parties figured that out, so the eventual ~700m Wii third party market adds 2800 or so profitable games for about 6000, down from 7200 (down from a theoretical 7600 with GC)

I've spoken to Sony about this before and they've admitted to making typos in press-releases. They don't retract them because its not worth it usually.

408m / 480m is a pretty easy typo really through the end of 2010. I have Sony's shipments by quarter before the  edit to the September quarter on their site at these levels:

PS3 SW Mar Q Jun Q Sept Q Dec Q
2006       5.2
2007 8.1 4.7 10.4 26
2008 16.8 22.8 21.2 40.8
2009 18.9 14.8 23.9 47.6
2010 29.3 24.8 35.3 57.6

You'll notice the numbers are exactly the same, save for the September 2010 quarter as on Sony's website http://www.scei.co.jp/corporate/data/bizdataps3soft_sale_e.html which as I say was changed a month ago and doesn't make sense with the seasonality of the December 2010 quarter and the magnitude of titles released - GT5, COD, etc.

I got now... but I'm confuse yet.

* 480m is a wrong or typo... ok.
* The sum of the numbers in Sony website is 424.8m.
* The sum of the numbers in your table is 408.2m.

What the real number? 480m, 408.2m or 424.8m?

We have an 8 a 2 and two 4, so hmmm, 844.2m I guess!

isn't wii at about 87M now? or it could be way low knowing that PS3 has shipped more than wii doing 2.2M

I haven't checked but I think its 87m / 52.5m / 50.2m or so for the consoles through March - obviously we'll know in a couple weeks when the official shipment numbers come out.

1.7 for 360 ... we have a good 2.5 mill sold :-S .. not to mention they sold 1.3 mill in states alone these last 3 months on depleted stock.

I'm not sure why you mention depleted stock.  The stock isn't low because they shipped a ton.  That would mean there were fewer shipped, which would make sense because they pulled January/February shipments for the holidays.

Similar thing happened for the PS3 last year.  Stock was also low in the US.  3.3 million sold in the three month period on vgchartz, and only 2.2 million shipped in the quarter.
