Forums - Nintendo - I'm not buying this 3D thing

The use of 3D in anything is, was, and always will be a gimmick.  I can't see 3D.  I don't want to see 3D.  If it didn't take so much time and proofreading you would never ever see me make a post with either the number 3 or the letter D in it again.  This gimmick is a way to get a sucker to pay more money to see a movie.  It is also a way to get a remake of Pocahontas to become the top grossing film of all time, but that's neither here nor there.  But I am not here to talk about this overutilized trickery's usage in cinema.  I'm speaking of the latest gaming system to claim to be 3D.  I am speaking of the 3DS.

People have asked me if I plan on buying the latest Nintendo handheld.  My answer is nuh-uh.  I will not buy it and it's not just because of Nintendo's reliance on a tired gimmick.

First off, for those of you who don't know me well, I am a massive Wii fan.  Unless you have been living under a rock, I am sure that you are aware that the Wii's sales have been dipping.  I will not buy a 3DS because I would start buying games for it instead of the Wii and this would take away from the Wii's software sales.  This might not sound like much but it is.  Look at my collection if you don't believe me.  I still need to add like 20 more games.

The 3DS is supposed to have awesome 3rd party support.  To hell with that.  If I were to support them I'd be selling out.  I like supporting systems with little to no 3rd party support.  That's why I am such am big Wii and N64 fan.  I'd rather buy five Nintendo games than support developers that didn't give a diddly squat about Nintendo until the 3DS.  Super Street Fighter IV would've been great for Nintendo fans a year ago, Capcom.

Speaking of the N64, wasn't it supposed to have 3D graphics?  Well...  wasn't it?  If not, it looks like I was ripped off.  Let me guess, this is a better form of 3D and 15 years from now Nintendo will show off an even better form of 3D and act like this 3D didn't exist.  Fool me once, shame on you.  Fool me twice, shame on me.  I won't be fooled again.

Also, I'm sick of getting the same crap.  I mean really... I already own the best game that will be released on the system or will there be a better game than Ocarina of Time on it?  I highly doubt it.  There's also Rayman 3D coming out for the system which is actually a 3D enhanced version of Rayman 2: The Great Escape that came out in 2000 for the Dreamcast and Splinter Cell 3D which is just a fancy name for Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory which came out in 2005.  Don't try to crap on me in my backyard and tell me that it's a California mudslide.  I don't live in California.

There also just isn't enough time in the day.  Between working, gaming on the Wii, and having sex I barely have enough time to eat, shower and sleep.  How in the world would I have time for the 3DS?  The answer is that I wouldn't.  You guys should follow suit.  Instead of paying money to watch jiggling boobs in Dead Or Alive: Dimensions, spend that money going to a strip club if you don't have a girl of your own.

Me buying this handheld would also be a betrayal to the magnificent 2D renaissance that is going on.  Awesome platformers like New Super Mario Bros. Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Wario Land: Shake it will give way to games like Super Monkey Ball : Could it possibly be worse than that Step and Roll Game? 3D and several other lets make a barren game with bitchin' looking 3D environments games.  Thank you no.  I am not selling out.

In conclusion, if I want to see a beautiful 3D environment, I'll step outside.  I play games to escape from reality and not to be like reality.  Am I the only one that feels this way?

Soon Nintendo will learn the cost of this stupid move, and then the DS will outsell the 3DS (es expected!). Anyways, I was thinking in buying it as my first portable, but I'm not so sure now, I'm problably gonna have the 3D slider  turned off always, so I might as well just wait until it's price drops.

Have you played the 3DS yet?

I have heard rumors that the pop out effect isn't very good.

I'm not into this whole 3D thing either, it doesn't even seem to have the impact on movies (box office) as much as it use to. Sony and Nintendo gotta get outta that 3D business and go back to makin my games!

Bet with Conegamer and AussieGecko that the PS3 will have more exclusives in 2011 than the Wii or 360... or something.

I agree with you. I can't see the 3D well, it is a gimmick.

I don't see any difference in 3D graphics beyond Mario Sunshine.
I don't see any difference in 2D graphics beyond Super Metroid.

I'm waiting for the 3DS to have games I want to play, and 3D Mario/Zelda on a handheld is not one of them. Kid Icarus is a maybe; Paper Mario/2D Mario/Mario Kart and an Advance Wars/F-Zero if they make them are what I'll buy - despite the 3D, not because of it.

I've seen this before.

Whether or not you fully agree, Nintendo DS can come off as gimmicky, but Sony's commentary is fairly strange. "With the DS, it's fair to say that Nintendo stepped out of the technical race and went for a feature differentiation with the touch screen," Harrison says. "But I fear that it won't have a lasting impact beyond that of a gimmick - so the long-lasting appeal of the platform is at peril as a direct result of that."

That's not even the worst of them, though. When it comes to discussing target audiences, it becomes painfully obvious why Harrison doesn't believe Nintendo is competition. "Nintendo knows its target audience, because it has really narrowed that down; and it's pretty much defined by a boy or girl's ability to admire Pokemon," he says.

Some people can see 3D, some people can't see 3D, some people like touch interface, some people hate touch interface, some people is obsesed with HD graphics, some people can't see the difference between HD and normal resolution. Life goes on, carry on.

Where's tl;dr version?

Dual Screen, touch screen, HD, motion controls, analog sticks on controllers, rumble, all these things are/were considered gimmicks when they came out.

Some of them have pretty much become standards (HD, DA,  dual  screen for DS and  touch screen for the new handhelds).

Today's gimmick when used well usually become tomorrow's standard.

People like to throw around the word gimmick all the time like it's a bad thing.

Gimmicks are one of the things that moves gaming forward so it doesn't get stale.

Nope. But I'll play one. Once I get a job. In two years :(

But touch screen and motion controls change the way the game is played (they normally make it easier to play). But what does 3D change in the game? The way you see doesn't make the game better (or worse), so Nintendo wasting a good 120$ on that 3D screen is just burning money for something very few people will care about.
