I think if Pokemon Grey comes out, which some members of GameFreak say won't happen while others say its probable or that it might come. If Pokemon Grey becomes a reality it will launch next year in Japan. Now whether this Pokemon game will be on 3DS is another question.

While the 3D effects in Black and White could be translated into 3D on 3DS the question is will they? Fact is Nintendo has never released the third version of a Pokemon game on a new console. All three have traditionally been released on the same hardware.

However Black and White break with tradition. Traditionally Game Freak hasn't released more then one generation of Pokemon to a single platform. Blue/Red/Yellow all released on GB, Gold<Silver,Crystal all released on GBC, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald all on GBA, Diamond/Pearl/Platinum on DS.

So with Black and White breaking with Nintendo and GameFreaks tradition, they could also break other traditions. Infact Grey may never be released at all. Also who says Ruby and Sapphire will be remade? GameFreak could choose not too. Now that they've broken with traditional predictability we have no idea what might happen.

I think we will see the first Pokemon game on 3DS in 2012 for Japan and 2013 for North America. Whether this will be Grey or not I don't know. Remember Pokemon Dash was released on DS before any other versions. I expect some sort of Pokemon title in 2012.

A third version of the current generation is a given as usual.

But you forgot that Silver/Gold were actually Gameboy game and that only Crystal was only for GameBoy Color.

Yes I am. It was compatible with Gamboy , unlike Crystal.

Yes it was, but it was still a GBC game, says so right on the packaging. GBC and GB cartridges were essentially the same but that doesn't mean that Gold or Silver were any less GBC games. Like if Grey comes to 3DS but has backwards compatability with DS, does that make it a DS game? No its still a 3DS game.

I guess it could be argued both ways, but officially as seen on the boxart the games were both GBC titles!

Going by the history of Pokemon releases we'll see Pokemon Grey launch in Japan in September 2011. In September 2012 Pokemon 3DS will be released.

Why should it take years for them to release the first 3DS Pokemon? Pokemon Grey will be easy to develop since they'll use many things from Black and White and they are probably already in the planning phase of the 3DS games.

So far the release dates for Japan have been:

1996 (Original)

1998 (Yellow)

1999 (Gold, Silver)

2000 (Crystal)

2002 (Ruby, Sapphire)

2004 (January) (Fire Red, Leaf Green)  (probably intended for a late 2003 release)

2004 (September) (Emerald)

2006 (Diamond, Pearl)

2008 (Platinum)

2009 (Gold, Silver)

2010 (Black, White)

(Source Wikipedia)

Going by past releases the latest possible release date for Pokemon 3DS will be late 2013. But Nintendo will want Pokemon on the 3DS as soon as possible and since their release schedule mirrors the DS one almost perfectly we will most likely see them end of next year.

It took them two years to release Pokemon on the DS; what makes this so different?

Why would it be different? DS came out end of 2004 in Japan. Diamond and Pearl were released at the end of 2006. The 3DS was released in february (but Nintendo intended to release it at the end of 2010). End of 2012 would be one and a half years, two years if we consider the system was pushed back due to production issues. It would be business as usual.

Seriously, guys. Pokemon 6th gen isn't coming until 2014 Japan 2015 UK/US. Nintendo took a big decision when making B/W a DS game. It means no 3DS version for about four years. Pokemon is a brand, which means in order to protect that brand they only add new pokemon very occassionally - every three or four years. These 157 from B/W will last through several years of the cartoon series, 3 or 4 films, several sets of Pokemon cards and years of the competitive battling scene getting to grips with the new gen and the ins and outs of the new metagame. Pokemon is a special case, and from Pokemon's perspective, it cannot release a new gen for some time now.

From a console perspective, Pokemon sells. Shedloads. B/W could reach 20 million lifetime because it's launched on a console with about 140 million sold. Why release that on a console with 4 million by year's end, max, and cut off the rest of the sales?

A 3DS Pokemon will likely launch to about 30-40million machines if it releases in 2014; which will let the series get the kind of sales it always gets (10-20 mil).

All of this is not to say we wont see Pokemon Grey or R/S Remakes coming to 3DS before then, though. These side-games usually make 5-10 mill and so can release earlier in 3DS' life. But even then, I wouldn't bet on it.

Doesn't say "Only For" in the corner. You could play Gold and Silver just fine on a Game Boy Pocket or original Game Boy. :P

@ toastboy

There won't be a Gen 6 for sometime. 3 years for Japan at the earliest. And simply, don't play with full brightness. What kind of gamer are you? I play my DS Lite on the lowest settings and I can get 20 hours out of the damn thing. Don't wear out your 3DS battery by having everything on :P
