Really, all you have to do is look at Killzone 3 (which also supports 3D and easily looks better than Killzone 2). |
i heard dey went from using real time cutscenes to prerendered ones too

you guys can looks at some screens here! Uc2 looks more detailed (enviorments) but UC3 screen shots look a lot more cleaner. Tell me you opinon!
| Slimebeast said: ell they did. There's a plausible explanation for all this. It's the 3-D graphics. A designer guy from ND in a gametrailers interview recently said that 3D in Uncharted demands essentially twice as much rendering power (those were his almost exact words) and they had to develop tricks to deak with that. So there definately has been a penalty to performance and decrease in image quality to get the game to support 3-D. |
i heard they did dat with kz3 and ended up going sub hd when 3d is on and getting rid of the cool motion blur fx form kz2

da prerendered stff looks better in uc3
da gameplay looks shots look the same, except for the other one above which looks better in 2

I seee you've done some of your homework. Did you also hear that the graphics are already ahead on the technical side of things than where Uncharted 2 was in the same timeframe? Just a thought: if you're assuming (from one screenshot) that UC3 will somehow look worse than UC2, you don't know this dev very well. Really, all you have to do is look at Killzone 3 (which also supports 3D and easily looks better than Killzone 2). |
Thank you lol.
Bolded: yes and no. If you account for all factors - including the 3-D support - the game will overall be better looking. I mean 3-D shouls realistically have a significant penalty. But IMO it's a penalty worth it. For usually much much less than half the theoretically needed double rendering power you can get true 3-D. So I am all for ND's (and Sony's) priorities here.
Killzone 3 yes, very impressive graphics everyone say. But maybe Guerilla used a different technique for their 3-D? I don't know the names of them techniques but apparently Crysis 2 uses a very efficient and economical but somewhat ugly 3-D that only gives like a 3% penalty. Maybe Uncharted 3's 3-D gives a much bigger penalty than KZ3?

Exactly! Now that you say it I remember reading that (probably on that Eurogamer gfx analysis collaboration thingy).
There's different ways to deal with the penalty from 3-D.

You don't know if there's a penalty for using 3D, and one screenshot certainly isn't indicative of that. Not only that, but if Guerrilla can pump out a much more technically sound title than Killzone 2 (while including 3D), I have no doubt that Sony's greatest devs will have no trouble. Something tells me that later on down the road, new UC3 screenshots/footage/gameplay will feed you full of crow. I still remember the early days of Uncharted 2, where people claimed it looked no different to Drake's Fortune. Look how that turned out. |
Wait man.
I am not saying that Uncharted 3 will definately look worse than Uncharted 2. I was objecting towards the comparison in the article in the OP, about "the leap forward" that's just not there on these particular screens. And I was arguing that even if it turns out that these screens represent the final game, there's a logic and satisfying reason for it - the 3-D - and it could still be an improvement when looking at the whole picture.
Naughty Dog are the best in the business when it comes to graphics and those guys always surprise me, so I do believe the final outcome can be that we'll all agree that UC3 looks even better than UC2.

If the "penalty" is in the 3D, it defeats your argument. Your talking about 2D screens, he's talking about sub-HD 3D. Completely different. Also, the motion blur from KZ2 was engine-taxing in and of itself, and since they used MLAA instead of Quincux AA (as used in KZ2), it made much more sense to do without the heavy use of blur. Just read through the Official thread, you'll learn a thing or two. |
In KZ3 the penalty is only apparent when 3-D is on (you get no motion blur and you get sub-HD res). In 2-D mode everyone can see the improved graphics. Everybody wins.
But other games handle 3-D differently - some devs make the whole game, including the 2-d version of the game, look worse and thus suffer from 3-D support.
Not saying I know which method UC3 is using.

naw man they took the motion blur out in 2d mode too and prerendered the cutscenes because they had to make gfx cutbacks from the first game which did all the cutscenes in rt and had awesome blur
