Forums - Nintendo - Nintendo ruined gaming-official (so did Apple)

alekth said:

Err, so Nintendo is bad for not really allowing small developers to make a game, but then so is Apple for allowing too many small developers to make a game?

I agree that the argument doesn't make sense.  Nintendo does have a space for small developers to release their games.  It's called WiiWare.

"'We used to have a free and open game business,' said EA founder Trip Hawkins. 'And then Nintendo came along and introduced a thing called a licensing agreement ...' "

"...I'm interested to know when the industry was a better place. Back during the Atari days, when the industry crashed thanks to a slew of unlicensed crap? "

The author pretty much said it all right there.  It is also interesting that Nintendo is singled out here when all platform holders have licensing fees.

Very nicely picked up. I noticed that as well.

We know that EA hates Nintendo, so it's logical they say that. I said all this in the OP why it's ironic etc...

Also, 'pre-nintendo' reminds me of the 80s, or, the videogames crash. Something EA should read up on if they want videogaming to continue

Here lies the dearly departed Nintendomination Thread.

That seems like a complaint levied at the console gaming scene in general, because everyone does licensing now. Singling Nintendo out for that 25 years after the fact seems odd, especially to then simultaneous praise and bash the mobile space

Methinks Trip knows not what he says

Monster Hunter: pissing me off since 2010.

I get the impression that most of you are not aware that EA founder Trip Hawkins isn't working for EA anymore since quite a long time. What you need to know is that 25 years ago, just like this generation, EA did bet on the wrong horse. Back then Hawkins was in charge of EA and he still holds a grudge against Nintendo, because he blames them for his own bad business decisions (just like the EA of today).

Sounds like EA's excuse for releasing so much shovelwae on the Wii and then blaming the audiance when Dead Space Extracton didn't sell.

so Nintendo is singled out when all plaform manufacturers have licenses

Everyone should be making games, let the quality go down and the market crash again, then another company as smart as Nintendo will understand that what really matters is quality and start again making great games. Seriously, small developers CAN make games through XBL, Wii Ware and this kind of services, still if they fail to sell well will never become famous.

CURRENTLY PLAYING: Xenoblade (Wii), Super mario 3D land (3DS), Guild Wars (PC)

Trip Hawkins should just make his own console if he feels so restricted then.

Oh wait, he actually did, and it failed horribly.

I LOVE ICELAND!

Yeah, because gaming was totally not in ruins pre-NES.

EA needs a scapegoat, it's that simple. Besides they are still losing millions (over $320m last quarter, I think) and need to find excuses.

He doesn't work for them anymore but is forever the company man.

What system was that?

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
