Forums - Sales Discussion - 3rd party support for Wii is going fairly well.

Combined software sales for Wii and DS pr 15th december are - worldwide - about 7.2 million. Nintendo sold 4.2 million games. This means that there were 3 million games sold, that were 3rd party, combined for DS and Wii.

The combined software for PsP,Ps3 and Ps2 is 4 million. Sony has sold 776k games. Which means that they have 3,25 million 3rd party game sales.

Microsoft has with the X360 sold 2,7 million games the last week. 700k of those are from Microsoft. That means 2 million are from 3rd parties.

In total, on all the main platforms the companies have, Nintendo beats Microsoft, but comes second to Sony.

If we divide it by the number of platforms, we get 1,1 mill pr Sony gaming machine, 1,5 pr Nintendo gaming machine and 2 million pr Microsoft machine.

That means, that Nintendo platforms sell about as many 3rd party games as Sony and Microsoft ones.

So apparently, the Wii is following the DS tracks. DS gained more and more 3rd party support, it looks like that is now happening to the Wii.

EDIT: There were some people who did not understand how I did things, and why I did it like I did. If you understood, you don't have to read this.

Software Totals:

Console Weekly
3,819,968
3,435,260
2,795,040
1,745,095
1,607,152
741,472
30,617
26,757
15,855
Total 14,217,216

As you can see, The Nintendo Family has about 7,2Million games sold, The Sony has 4M and Microsoft's has 2,7M

Publisher Totals:

Console Week
Nintendo 4,230,932
EA 1,898,021
Activision 1,379,769
Sony 776,798
Ubisoft 714,881
Microsoft 698,341

Nintendo Wii and DS have 4,2 Million games sold, that are made by Nintendo. That leaves 3 million for 3rd party on those consoles.

Sony has 776k - which leaves 3,2 for 3rd party developers

Microsoft has 700k - which leaves 2 million for 3rd party dev's.

Sony has 3 gaming machines, so average is 1,1M pr machine.

Microsoft has 1 gaming machine so average is 2M pr machine.

Nintendo has 2 gaming machines so average is 1,5 pr machine.

In % it is of course lower than the competition.

Why does DS 3rd party sales help the Wii? Quit the combining it makes no sense.

Libraries sell systems not individual games

The only new IP on the Wii that is "3rd" party that is not multiplatform that has done really well is mario and sonic the Olympics. This is for new IP's though. For the most part unless your trying to copy nintendo like mini games or the game is an established franchise like guitar hero 3 or resident evil 4 there isn't much for 3rd party on the Wii, just look at poor zack and wiki :(

What about Trauma Center: SO (500k +), MySims (500 +), Red Steel (1m +) Rayman Raving Rabids (1m +)? Plenty of established franchises have racked up some very solid sales too.

It's not worth writing off Zack & Wiki for sales yet either, Europe is where the game will sell best so with some good marketing it could end up settling at 500k worldwide when all is said and done, hardly bad for a game in a genre which is practically non-exsistent.

I just can't imagine a third party being disappointed by the sales of any individual game yet, but I can see alot being pleased with how their second or third tier-team managed to end up selling 300k+ on a game which cost them near nothing to develope.

He has his excuses...  Rayman Raving Rabids is multiplatfrom, MySims is not new IP, etc...

If you exclude everything, than yes, none of the systems sell any software.  :p

The development budgets on Wii titles are much lower. Wii games don't need to sell large amounts to be profitable. And with less capital investment, the risk in making games for the Wii is lower as well.

Zack & Wiki will sell around 500.000. Consider that Capcom wanted to sell 420.000 RE4Wii and 600.000 REUC.

RE is one of the best franchises in gaming, Zack & Wiki is a new game, with a unique art style in a niche genre. I think Capcom is quite pleased with Z&W sales.

I like Zack&Wiki and wish it well, but 500k is way over the top. Maybe 300k if it has legs and actually gets advertised in Europe, which should be enough to make it profitable.

To do the amazingly modest thing and quote myself ...

In North America Take Two had 68 games on the charts in 2007 with 56 of those selling less than 250,000 units. The breakdown by console is as follows:

22 (16 below 250,000)- XBox 360
14 (11 below 250,000)- PSP
13 (12 below 250,000)- PS3
10 (9 below 250,000)- PS2
6 (5 below 250,000)- Wii
3 (3 below 250,000)- DS

When you look at the distribution you will notice that they have been heavily supporting the systems which are selling the slowest and have the highest development costs. Personally, looking at their year it becomes clear why they're losing money being that they're (probably) somewhat profitable on their PSP, PS2, Nintendo DS and Wii libraries but are certainly losing a fortune on their XBox 360 and PS3 libraries.

300k would probably generate a huge profit for Zack & Wiki.  This isn't a PS3 game where 500k units sold rarely even breaks even.
