Wow, this thread is so misleading, it was like if 3DS was hacked, not the DS portion of the 3DS.

The R4 carts are the cheapest and most outdated carts available.

What exactly are these cartridges? Can I just buy blank ones and download games on them or do I have to buy them preloaded with a game from a street vendor?

Actually this is a little alarming as pirates can use this opening to attack the firmware.

You can download games on the internet put them on a mini sd stick and then put the stick in the R4 and play all your favorite games, no mod no chip needed

As i read and what i searched only the DSi compatible flashcards works, so the most ot them will be unusable on 3DS and the DSi ones just work as a DS cartridge.
