Err, not a loser? I'm sure that that's too harsh a term since it definitely pleases its fans, but considering how much money it lost, considering how pathetic its performance is for the once mighty PlayStation brand, well...

Also, just for the sake of it, Sega home console sales are very disputed. At the higher end, they could near 70m (39m MD, 17m Saturn, 10m DC, add-ons...), which PS3 will take a while to reach. Add the handhelds and PS3 may not outdo everything Sega after all.

No on likes a party pooper

it maybe a looooser but all i know is Sony have one a hell of good blu-ray player in a few years, cheap as chips, online shizzle and plays some great games too

As the loser console for this generation has PS3 achieved sales curiosities that put its loser sales into some kind of historical context.

Interestingly in 2010 PS3 managed to do this:

 - Sell more than the combined life time sales of Xbox and Gamecube (~46 million)

- Sell more than the combined lifetime sales of all of Sega's home consoles (~45 million)

in 2011 PS3 will:

-sell 50 million consoles ltd

- sell more than the combined lifetime sales of all Sega consoles (~55 million)

- sell more than the combined lifetime sales of Ninendo's previous 2 home consoles (~53 million)

- probably sell more than any other individual Nintendo home console in history other than the Wii (~62 million), if not then it will definitely do it some time in 2012.

That's the "loser " console for the 7th generation.

As someone's sig says, 3rd place has never looked so good.

In 2012 it's possible that PS3 will no longer be the "loser" console (I doubt it though).

im saying that because of the games not sales.

Being in 3rd place never felt so good

My personal opinion has always been that this gen wont end for at least another 3 - 5 years because the HD consoles have been beaten by a device that is inferior in graphical output. thus the current capabilities of the PS3 are far ahead of what the mass consumer has demanded this far. so in a nutshell, i think the PS3 still has a long time to go before the chips are counted. i think it will do phenominally well in 2013 - 2015 when it will be a lot cheaper and the library will speak for itself.

there are massive reasons why i think the PS3 will last for ages, but i would end up writing so much stuff, no one would read it anyway, so i think the PS3 still has a lot longer for reasons i havent discussed solely in this post.

This time 2 years ago I remember there being rumours Sony would be abandoning PS3

From the business side of things, it really does look like the ps3 is the loser. It might have helped define Blu-ray, but as a product ROI, it is one of the biggest losers in technology for a long time.

From marketshare size, it is again a huge loser, it went from 70% to what it is at currently.

From a consumer side, it is a complete winner, I mean a device can do just about anything, and plays a massive library.

We all know the PS3 is no looser at all. It could have been bigger, specially after PS2, but that doesn't change the fact that is a hell of a console.

By the way, it is really impressive how the gaming market has grown. Seriously now, do we really have to worry about the future of gaming as every now and then someone says?

i don't worry about the future of gaming, i worry about the future of certain gaming genres

What genres then?

FPS and TPS games.

If Sony hadn't made two massive price cuts and massive losses resulting from said price cuts, those facts wouldn't be as interesting. However it is still impressive given their dedication to the platform thus far regardless of the losses.

Tease.

This is why I'll never call the PS3 a huge success.  It did well and I won't deny that and has released some awesome games but it gave the 360 are huge market share.  Sony could have sealed Microsoft's fate if it would have released cheaper with better games but instead Microsoft experienced tremendous growth.  Sony now has 2 competitors that are doing really well.  There is no way the Sony is happy with how everything turned out.  They just want to re-coup losses and make as much money as possible before starting the next generation.

ps3 isnt a looser, look at all the games coming out and the ones that have been out in 2011, i expect ps3 to turn out more and more exclusive titles as times progress.

fact is ps3 was to expensive at launch and cost them the gen, i highly doubt sonys next home console will be at such a high price. but its ceertainly one hell of a console to own
