Plus the tsunami won't affect DS that much, as it's sales were already low there anyway.

Above: still the best game of the year.

My point is that expectations are not always achieved.

The only way the DS will outsell the 3DS this year is if they stop manufacturing the 3DS.
3DS > DS 2011 YTD by August.

You seem to be quite convicted for someone without facts.

The GBA CRUSHED the DS in Americas even at the year it was full out. The reverse happened at Japan, and it was so-so in EMEAA. Add in the factors I gave on the OP and there you have it: a 3DS toasted by it's predecessor. |
GameCube sales make me laugh!
*On Topic* You seem to forget that this is a 100% different situatuin though. 3DS is here to replace the DS...back in 2004 and 2005 DS wasn't really supposed to take over right away. Let me show you:
Gameboy Advance was released in March 2001 in Japan & June 2001 in America and Others. Gameboy Advance SP was released in February 2003 in Japan and March 2003 in America/Others. Gameboy Advance even had a 3rd design called Gameboy Micro released after DS in September 2005.(Though sold only a little over 2 Million) DS wasn't even supposed to be Nintendo's next Gen Handheld: Why would anyone buy it at 1st when GBA was still Nintendo's current Gen Hanheld even after DS launched?
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6086771.html
Back when the DS released the GBA still got huge amounts of Nintendo support and while the DS may get some support it wont get nearly as much as GBA did after the DS launch:
As of now DS has no new games announced for it now that Pokemon just came out and I fully expect it to be DS last big game. In 2005 GBA still got loads of Nintendo support:
DK King Of Swing__Donkey Kong Country 3__Dr. Mario__Dynasty Warriors Advance__Final Fantasy IV Advance__Fire Emblem The Sacred Stones__Zelda The Minish Cap__Mario Party Advance__Mario Tennis Power Tour__WarioWare Twisted__Yoshi's Universal Gravitation__Pokemon Emerald.
Also, when DS launched GBA was only on the market for 3 years and 5 months. DS has been on the market for 6 years and 4 months now.
Again, the situation isn't the same and 3DS sales will catch on quicker and outsell DS in 2011.
I don't think the DS will outsell the 3DS this year, mainly because Nintendo is saying there won't be shortages of the 3DS. The lead of the DS over the 3DS will be a little less than 2 million when the 3DS launches in the West. I think the first two full weeks in the West will cut that lead down to 1 million. Without significant shortages I can't see the DS being able to hold on to such a small lead for the rest of the year. Maybe if there are major 3DS shortages during the holidays, and Nintendo does a new price cut and bundles of the DS, then it may be able to reclaim the lead.
Either way I'm excited about there being a new console to follow the sales of.
3DS will outsell the DS. Nintendo will make sure that happens.

For anybody not owning it yet, DS is as NEW as 3DS. Moreover it's a lot cheaper and, unless they start destroying them, it has an immense game and SW library. For example PS3 outsold PS2 yearly the first time in 2008.

Well said, but it seems my word and facts are not enough to proove some people, but time is a better teacher than anything. Bu the year's end, I'll be demanding an apology thread, pretty much like toastboy.
And by half of next generation, everybody will say how the Iwhatever or smartphones have affected the handheld market, despite being Nintendo's own fault for causing the 3DS doom. Just wait and see, I'm gonna bookmark this prediction for years just to say that I adviced you guys.

Even if it's not doomed, what happened to PS3 shows us what a high launch price does. "But it's got features justifying it!" - someone could say. So did PS3. "But NGP will be even more expensive!" . someone else will add. So NGP too will have a slow growth and will be outsold yearly initially, if not by PSP, surely by DS. Sony may decide when a gen begins
, Nintendo may print money, but people can't. "But people spend even more for iPhones!" - someone will finally try to object. Nobody else than Apple managed up until now to make people happily pay so much.
