Halo 3, Forza 2, PGR 4, Mass Effect, Bioshock. And lets look at the PS3 exclusives like Lair (Already off to a bad start), HS, R&C, Uncharted and Warhawk. Of those PS3 games, how many have sold a million?

I'm sorry but convince me that the 360 will have a better year than this year. Too Human is not a system seller. (DMC 4 for 360 will sell more in my opinion) and the known IP's have no resonable timeframe to release. IMO no 360 exclusive next year combined will sell as much as Halo 3.

The only real reason the PS is in the running in the first place is the brand. Oh, you can see from attach rates that many of the *AAA* titles failed to ignite a flame under buyers. Now, the 40gb is humming along and folks are proclaiming success. Sweetness - but let's see how things are going in February/March - and see if the PS3 (and even the 360) is going to maintain and cut into the 360's lead. And ... as far as a better year? One acryonym ...

GTA IV - and the both the episodic content and the EXTRA episodic content that's only available on the 360 will make a huge difference.

No it won't. Why? You still have to pay for it. It's not free. If it was included in the game at no extra cost, it would sway the last gen consumer. Those features are great if you already own a 360. But the consumer won't be fooled when he has to spend $60 for a game, $250 + for the system, $50 for XBox live gold, then when the content is finally out, they have to spend $15 for both episodes. It will make a difference, but not a big one.

Hey, what happen with the "40gig is gimped, no one will buy it! No BC means no sale!" comments? I heard a lot of those in the past.

The average consumer is not as informed as you think. Most folks are still under the delusional cloud that the 40gb PS3 can play PS games. It CAN play PS1 but doggone - no one is telling folks this and people are still buying PS3s thinking they will play PS2 games. Personally, I know of 3-4 potential PS3 buyers who didn't know that.

And for the folks not on Live - you don't need Gold to download content. You need it to play online. And as far as folks not buying off Live - LOL! You are funny. Folks will buy stuff off Live like hotcakes. GHIII, GHII and Halo prove that. And when Live turned 5, folks were flocking to download the free game Casconne (whatever that junk is called).

And why in the devil do PS3 fanboys always quote "This+this+this ..." stuff? You can get an Arcade and a used HD to download the content, and the episodes - and STILL have money left over vs. buying a PS3 and the game.

Here - $399 PS3 + $59.99 game vs. $279 360 + $59.99 game + $60 HD + extra content (????)

Even if the content is $15-$20 a pop, MS isn't stupid. They aren't gonna toss $50M on a hunch. They are in the biz of making loot - and they know the content will sell.

For roughly the same price, you will get the complete GTA experience. For just $340, you can get it on the 360 without the DLCs, but on the PS3, it will be $460, please. And let's not even consider an MS price cut just to sweeten the deal. They'll do it easily ...

It sold less despite launching in europe for 2007, being a brand new system with ample supply, 200 dollars worth of price drops, tons of advertising, and being the third entry in the most popular console line out there.

And it sold worse then the 360 still, that's a failure.

Note: Some games in my collection are no longer owned, but have owned.

We all consider 2007 to be a big failure for the PS3 but with a $500-600 price for 10 months out of the year and "no games" (360 owners want us to believe this one, rofl) it's amazing to see that the 360 could only sell a mere 10% more for a full year.

I can't believe the PS3 will do worse next year. I actually think the PS3 can double it's 2007 sales with the lower price and lots of new titles.

Am I alone? Anyone here realistically believes the PS3 can do worse or repeat the "crappy" performance of 2007?

I think in 2008 the Ps3 might eat down that 7.3M lead to 3.5M or even less.

sorry too say but what a BS....

the ps3 train really started with price drop and new sku's

I think Ninja Gaiden 2 would have been worth mentioning there. That will sell systems. I can bet you they are trying their hardest to get that one out before holiday season '08.

As for the exclusive GTA content: I think it'll matter. When a consumer goes into a store, and does not own a X360/PS3, and asks the clerk what the difference is, and they reply "oh, the Xbox 360 version is going to have extra content, and the PS3 version won't" and see that they could get a Xbox 360 for upto $130 cheaper in the US, or more.......It's going to matter to more people than you think.

Here's the issue of lineups, and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong:

The Playstation 3 has litterally no strong AAA exclusives until Metal Gear Solid 4 releases. No date has been solidified. After that, you have Killzone 2, Gran Turismo 5, and Killzone 2 that are planned in 08, but not confirmed.

The Xbox 360 has Banjo Kazooie 3, Alan Wake, Too Human, Fable 2, and a few other minor games. All are slated this year. However, the AAA exclusives such as Too Human will probably release earlier than MGS4.

So we know when the X360 lineup will start moving hardware, but not so much for the PS3. The PS3 will definately sell better this year than last, I don't think anyone can, or will argue that. But the argument I see is if it's going to sell neck-and-neck with the X360 for the whole of next year. The PS3 had a pricedrop 1 month ago vs. the X360 getting a pricedrop in August. Effectively, MS releasing the X360 Arcade Pack made the same difference on consumer purchasing as the $100 PS3 price cut.

The average gamer isn't going to care about the extra content. The average gamer doesn't even care about Xbox Live to begin with. As far as Banjo Kazooie 3, Alan Wake, Too Human, Fable 2, etc are concerned, none of them are proven system movers, and some of them are brand new IP's, so saying that they will boost hardware makes about as much sense as people saying the same thing about Lair, Heavenly Sword, and Warhawk in regards to the PS3. You also have to take into account that the 360 will still be above mass market price point for most of next year. It's really not even entirely accurate to call GTAIV a system mover, because the only reason it did so well last gen is because GTA3 and GTA: VC were released on a console that was already selling like crazy, so it would be more accurate to call the PS2 a GTA-mover and not the other way around.

I don't understand how people can claim that the PS3 is barely losing money now but MS won't drop the price by $100. The Xbox was losing less money at launch then the PS3 at launch. It's been 2 years and they have only dropped it by $50. The PS3 is now half the price it was quoted as costing at launch and people say "oh sony is probably only losing $50 to $100 dollars" wouldn't Microsoft, the richest company in the world, be losing less if not making a bunch of profit after two years. They could probably drop the price $100 and still barely lose money one the cheapest model. I bet they make almost $100 on the premium and probably more on the elite.

If MS finds itself in a position where it is losing ground to the PS3 then it will drop prices and bundle things and go all out like Sony did. I can easily see that making up for not having major exclusives. Problem is it does have great games.

Also the argument about how 360 has nothing left in the way of exclusives is stupid. People walk in looking to buy a system and their choices are PS3 and GTAIV or a 360, GTAIV and Halo 3. My guess is it will cost the same when GTA comes out. Also they might want to pick up an older game maybe like Bioshock, Crackdown, Mass Effect, or Gears or something. See every big game that comes out has a lasting effect. People don't just look at whats coming out today, or tomorrow, they look at whats already out.

Currently Playing:

Xbox 360 - Rock Band, NHL 08, Skate, Halo 3, Mass Effect

Wii - Mario Galaxy

A few problems:

-The PS3 dropped $200 in price, the 360 dropped like $30-50 or so (I'm not sure). The 360's price will drop more in 2008 than the PS3's price.

-This period includes the PS3's launch in Europe, that's a one time thing, not something that will be repeated in future years.

-How many weeks did the PS3 outsell the 360 worldwide? Maybe 11 weeks out of ~50. Aside from the Europe launch spike, 6 out of 50 weeks.

We don't provide the 'easy to program for' console that they [developers] want, because 'easy to program for' means that anybody will be able to take advantage of pretty much what the hardware can do, so the question is what do you do for the rest of the nine and half years? It's a learning process. - SCEI president Kaz Hirai

It's a virus where you buy it and you play it with your friends and they're like, "Oh my God that's so cool, I'm gonna go buy it." So you stop playing it after two months, but they buy it and they stop playing it after two months but they've showed it to someone else who then go out and buy it and so on. Everyone I know bought one and nobody turns it on. - Epic Games president Mike Capps

Peter - The Gold account (the $5/mo) lets you play multiplayer online, and get downloads 1 week earlier. That's it.

So the ball is in MS's court, on if they want to beat Sony. Sony has used up all of it's timeouts, and the ball is in Microsoft's court.

Playstation 3 - 2008 Software

Metal Gear Solid 4 / Metal Gear Online

Gran Turismo 5

Killzone 2

Playstation Home

Little Big Planet

Haze

Infamous

White Knight Story

Grand Theft Auto 4

Saints Row 2

Devil May Cry 4

Battlefield: Bad Company

Unannounced but inevitable:

Resistance 2 - Highly anticipated amongst the Online Gaming community.

I personally believe that some of the newer IPs might drop off but if they manage to live up to the hype, especially Killzone 2, the PS3 will be flying off the shelves. Hell if half of those IP's live up to the hype PS3 might even triple its sales (extremely unlikely).... I think it is safe to say as long as the gameplay aspect of Killzone 2 is very good we should expect Gears Of Wars type sales..

Also the fact that they will be adding in DVR/TV services.. Downloadable content such as Movies... They are trying to use the PS3 in all aspects.. This could potentially hurt them.. Since they won't be using their time wisely.. See Below..

Factoring newer Firmware to upgrade the PSN as well as PSN only-games the PS3 will finally have an extremely fresh line-up. Sony can possibly pick up sales tremendously if the format war ends, and the cost of the blu-ray laser diodes drops down. Once Sony stops worrying about Blu-Ray they can finally put their attention on the games. The whole point of putting Blu-Ray in wasn't so they could have large amounts of data for their games.. It was to get Blu-Ray players in everyones homes...

Most people forget they are fighting two wars with one console.

P.S

If MS drops 360 Elite to $300 it will be extremely hard to keep up. No one ever buys the Core version because of the fact it is just freaking inconvenient... Seriously who the fuck in their right mind said that..

Individual games rarely do anything but provide a small bump. It is overall lineup that boosts the base amount of sales per week/month.

The 360's last 4 months of 2007 setup for a even better 2008. The 360 library is so strong (and will continue to just get stronger in 2008) and that is what matters. To new console purchasers Halo 3, BioShock, Mass Effect, best versions of most 3rd party titles, etc. etc. is the reason why the 360 will continue to lead.

The 360's history of software sales and current install base has insured that 3rd party developers will have to be heavily lobbied and paid large amounts of cash by Sony to make a PS3 only game.

Libraries sell systems not individual games
