The development team at Playdead can add another award for Limbo under their belt after being awarded an Annie Award for Best Animated Video Game out of the four nominees including Quantic Dream’s Heavy Rain, Good-Feel & HAL Laboratory’s Kirby’s Epic Yarn, and Klei Entertainment Inc.’s Shank.
Not to put down Heavy Rain, Kirby’s Epic Yarn, or Shank, but Limbo’s win made me revisit the game last night just to see it which is a testament on how realistic graphics will always have a hard time standing the test of time. An argument can be made for Heavy Rain, but at it’s time of release it was one of the better looking games on the PlayStation 3 as a showcase piece. It was probably due to this phenomenon that Heavy Rain missed some votes because of being released so early during the year in which later games like God of War 3 trumped.
The Annual Annie Awards honor excellence in the field of animation representing 26 categories including best animated feature, home entertainment, television production, television commercial, short subject, video game, as well as individual achievements. The 38th Annual Annie Awards took place on Saturday, February 5, 2011, at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in Los Angeles, California.
