Forums - Nintendo - Reggie talks prices of software!

@rolstoppable  I never got the DSi(no GBA slot? ill stick to Lite). So ill take your word for it.  My next question is, why would Reggie even say this if its clear his company is also going this route? Those DSi games cant cost that much more than the Iphone ones.

He didn't really bash the idea of cheap games though, he was just saying you can't base the price of 3DS games on how much cheap games cost.  I'm pretty sure the full fledged games will still be their main priority.

Money can't buy happiness. Just video games, which make me happy.

^^^^  i agree with what you said, but i never got that Ninty (or Sony) were going to try to sell handhelds on the premise of playing 2 dollar games, that would be insane. IMHO it just seems like he is being paranoid and worried for no reason. Apple is not going to affect the 3DS in anyway, those Iphone people were not going to get a 3DS because they dont want a dedicated handheld and vice versa, like people have said before me, they are two different audiences. But i see no reason not to have your little 2 dollar games on your dedicated portable either, its not taking away from the full priced games. YOu can have your cake and eat it too.

@Baalzamon  who in the right mind would base the price of a cheap DL game on a 3DS game that is giving you a close to console experience???

@rolstoppable  people bring up Ipod all the time, lets not act like its just against Ninty, its been brouht up when they talk about PSP as well, as a matter of fact. anytime the GO was mentioned they threw it in direct comparison to the Ipods.  As for the OP I didnt get that the interviewer was making a big deal about 2 dollar games, but ill read again.

After reading the OP for a second time I still dont see it. The op says that Geoff said that 45 was too much for a portable game, but i dont see that quoted anywhere.  I agree with Reggie that a full fledged game warrants a full price, that goes without saying. But I dont agree that a 2 dollar game is disposable. Ive seen alot of people play 2 dollar games and keep playing them.(Bejeweled) If I may i would say that a retail game is more disposable, becasue with that i can always trade it in or sell it, thats just me. As for the "mentality", some of those games should be no more than two bucks, some of them should be free. I dont think anyone playing those is going to be of the mindset that they should pay 2 bucks for say a Zelda game, people are not that unreasonable, but its not like you can charge 30 bucks for Angry Birds, no one is going to buy it for that.

IMHO I wish there was a a link to the actual full article, because we have no quotes from the Geoff guy and it seems a lttle one sided in favor of Reggie

@superchunk  preach, man PREACH.

@Mr. Khan  your probably right, but to me it doesnt do that well for Ninty's image, at least to some core gamers, I mean when i walk into Best Buy and I see Dora the explorer, Icarly, Barbie, tennis game #215, biggest loser 5th edition all over the damn Wii wall, and then i look at teh PS3 side and see the Need for Speeds, LBP, Fallout, Street Fighter, Bioshock. For me it doesnt paint the Wii in a positive light.  I literally have to did thru the shovelware to get to the good games on Wii, IMHO when you have to search for good games on a console that console's library is questionable.  I know the shovelware has its place and people like it, but does it have to be so much??? A fireplace simulator???? A f****g bacheolor game???? how the hell do you even think to make a game about that???? Who are the people buying these games

This generation the Wii is the PS2. I remember last gen with my GameCube the majority of games were quality titles, same for X-Box. But you'd look over at the PS2 and see SpongeBob, Rugrats and Yoga Master. Their was so much crap on the PS2 I wasn't interested at all. Fact is when your console is the cheapest to develop for, and its also the most popular system everybody wants to make games for it.

Sony did exactly what Nintendo is doing, they didn't want to upset third parties so they allowed a ton of shovel ware and crappy games. However Sony also has a better relationship with third parties then Nintendo so Nintendo has even less of an ability to stick up to third parties.

As for Reggie being worried about I-Phone. He may not have to worry much but developers like N-Space have already begun talking about how they can make more by selling cheaply made 2$ games then their bigger budget handheld titles. Reggie doesn't want developers or gamers thinking they can get games for 2$.

In the end the 2$ games are disposable they aren't the kind of quality to challenge Nintendo's titles or Wii's. Then if developers really want to go the cheap route they can release 3DSWare and WiiWare etc...etc... like what is going to happen with Angry Birds. But I doubt Nintendo will allow the developers to sell their games for under 5$.

Soon, Nintendo will be the only game developer who doesn't devalue its own games by falling into the iPhone trap.

Too bad there's GBA emulation on Ipod/Iphone/Ipad devices so they don't even have to do it themselves.

Emulators are widespread on PCs since ages and that didn't hurt Nintendo all that much.

And are much better to play than a shitty touch screen with fake buttons.

Above: still the best game of the year.

This isn't by far the first time that Keighley tried this stuff on Reggie, the most popular instance certainly was the NSMB Wii vs. Modern Warfare 2 sales bet. Keighley asked Reggie about how big he thought NSMB Wii is going to be and when Reggie answered that he believed that it's going to be a big success, Keighley asked: "Bigger than MW2?" Reggie said he is sure that NSMB Wii will outsell one version of MW2 by the end of 2009. Keighley found that very amusing.

Then two months later when NSMB Wii had beaten MW2 on the PS3, Keighley insisted that Reggie had said that NSMB Wii would outsell the 360 version which was quite desperate on his part. The moral of the story is that gaming journalists try to create as much conflict as possible in everything they do regarding Nintendo. You can be sure that if Sony gets asked about their NGP, then nobody will bring up Apple's iPhone and its $2 games as possible threat.

While keighley was obviously trying to goad Reggie into it, he clearly said 360 multiple times.  Keighley never acted like he meant any platform and then a few months later said 'oh, but I really meant 360'.  The second time Keighley clarifies 360 only, Reggie says "I do believe so", and then lays out the timeline that he'll accept.

I agree with him competely. I hate cheap games, they devalue the value of full price games. And to have all these games avilable for just one or two Dollars is getting ridicilous and is giving gaming a bad name.

The video showed differently though. Reggie answered "I do believe so" to the question if NSMB Wii outsells one version of MW2 and Keighley quickly adds "On the 360" after Reggie spoke. Cut to next trailer.

That's not what happened at all.

Keighley: You're going to sell more copies of NSMBW than Modern Warfare will on 360?
Reggie: On one particular platform.
Keighley: Just on 360
Reggie: I do believe so.

While that last exchange was pretty quick, it seems weird that Reggie would go from "absolutely, I say that unequivocally" in reference to outselling a single platform to "I do believe so" if he still meant any single platform.

Also they don't cut it off right after and go to the next trailer.  Reggie goes straight into saying "You've got to give me the entire holiday selling season, so let's take it all the way through the January NPD data."  Never once saying one particular platform again.  He even says it'll be close which once again differs from the original "absolutely, I say that unequivocally" statement in reference to one particular platform.  You act like Keighley just threw in 360 at the end with no chance for Reggie to respond.
