That's rather insulting for Rareware to be compared to Retro.

No. There's nothing insulting about being compared to the developer with the best classic-to-crap ratio this side of Team Ico.

Wut?

Comparing the new Rare vs the current Retro is okay but one has to remember that neither DKCR nor Metroid Prime would be alive if it weren't from Rareware's DKC and Goldeneye. They were la crème de la crème.

I see nothing wut-worthy about that post. Like Rol said, Retro has yet to make a game, that is less than absolutely amazing.

again how is this so. A firmware for a piece of hardware > Games. New firmware gives way for new games thus new firmware is more available

What are you talking about ... ?

The last outstanding game Rare made was Perfect Dark.

And this is the problem I am having. Read what I said.
In your opinion the last good game Rare made was PD. That is fine, firstly that is your opinion, secondly Rare doesnt just do games. They do something that Retro can't (or hasn't done yet).

So again let us compare apples to apples and not apples to spaghetti.

They are 2 different situations and you keep bringing up only games. That is not only what Rare does, that is what Retro does and only what Retro does.

The thing is, Rare being reduced to creating avatars and firmware (and yes, I use reduced with all the negative connotation it implies) is one of the saddest things I've ever witnessed in gaming, and I'm sure I'm not alone there.

Here you have the company responsible for some of the great games of the 90s (albeit minus a few key staff members), having a lot of their effort focused on something other than creating games. I want to see them put out games as good as they used to (and if they did, I'd buy a 360 in an instant), because some random firmware means nothing to me.

It's like Nintendo someday telling Miyamoto that he can only create the user interface for the next console and have no other involvement in anything beyond that. It'd be disgraceful.

Yes, Rare in their heyday were possibly better than Retro are now. But the deterioration of Rare since then is unarguable... Meanwhile, Retro have a bright future. I can't say the same for Rare, but the worst thing is I don't foresee that changing.

Retro 65 % ?? Wow, the average age of the users that answered must be somewhere around 17...I can't justify this result in any other way!So most people think that the Prime Trilogy and DKC Returns beat Donkey Kong Country Trilogy,Killer Instict,GoldenEye,Banjo-Kazooie,Banjo-Tooie and Perfect Dark?? :S We are talking about games that wrote history versus sequels inferior to the originals! (And by originals I mean DKC 1,2,3 and Super Metroid)

(PS This post must have been created by someone about the age of 17... because it doesn't even include NES Battle Toads in its list war.)

Is the cat laughing at me, or is she approving what I just wrote? :P

Agreed. But you forgot so many great Rare games! Diddy Kong Racing and Star Fox Adventures and Donkey Kong 64 and Conker and more that I can't think of right now!

I know, you are right, It's just that I haven't played them so even though I've heard the best I can't have a personal opinion about them :)

Allow me.

You say, "but hmm Retro couldn't have made these games if Rare hadn't made suchandsuch games in the past," which is a moot point, because all games made today are to some extent based on or influenced by games made in the past. This does not reflect at all upon Retro's supremely high-quality of games made, who as people have said have yet to make a game that is "less than absolutely amazing."

It's the Team Ico part that I don't understand.
