Forums - Nintendo - Playing Wii with 3DS?

Since the 3DS has been announced I have wondered about the possibility of cross console games. Does anyone remember Four Swords Adventures for GameCube or how about the multiplayer in FinalFantasy:CrystalChronicles? Games in which you needed a GBA to play. The GBA added many elements of GamePlay to Four Swords and made the game more enjoyable. Also remember Sega and the VMU it was essentially a handheld console and used in the gameplay of several DreamCast games.

This has me wondering the potential of playing a Wii game with a 3DS. Everyone will rush to mention Pokemon and how you'll be able to link up your 3DS to Wii to trade Pokemon back and fourth and such (Inevitable). But what about more then that. The 3DS has the potential of being used in all sorts of titles.

Imagine a 2D sidescroller with 3D? On the Wii the title appears to be a side scroller, however it has layers. Using the 3DS you can view the enviroment in 3D. Using the 3DS to help you navigate your way through the 2D sidescroller. Imagine a Mario game being both Galaxy and NewSuperMarioBros, merging the best of both worlds together.

Or say Zelda in 3rd person on the Wii but first person on the 3DS. Go to shoot your bow and aim on the 3DS in full 3D while also aiming in 3rd person on the screen. Or how about controlling your many items with the 3DS and using 3D to navigate through tough dungeons.

Or what about mystery games. Games like CSI, find a piece of evidence pick it up on the Wii and look at the evidence in 3D on the 3DS. Being able to view the item in 3D you can twist it and observe it in a way you could never do without 3DS.

Or how about a puzzle game, where you see two parts of a puzzle one in 2D on the Wii and one in 3D on the 3DS. Both puzzles interact with one another meaning you need to use both devices to solve them. This would be amazing,

Or how about multiplayer? A game has both a 3D and 2D version. Your friend plays the second player but he is playing the game in 3D while you play in 2D. He can see things you can't and through 2D you can view things he can't. Imagine a ghost game where the apirition could be seen on the 3DS and not the Wii.

I can think of tons of ways you could play the Wii with the 3DS, can you? Do you think Nintendo will make titles that use both 3DS and Wii simultaneously for control?

Welcome I'm JoelCool7. What you think of this thread? Do you think it would be awsome to control your Wii with the 3DS?

Joe, I was told that their likely will not be much, if any, 3DS to Wii cross platform play but that they are designing their next home console with 3DS cross platform play in mind.

Not sure how that is supposed to come about or why that would prevent a 3rd party from doing something 3DS to Wii but that's the word I got from Nintendo.

I don't think 3rd parties will be prevented in any way from doing something cross platform 3DS/Wii, it's just that the next console will probably have some built in features (in the API or whatever it is called) making it easy to do cross platforming with minimal effort.

I doubt they will make it obligatory to have both platforms though to play a game, as that will limit the game's sales. If anything, it will be either some enhanced features you can unlock, or (what personally I would want most) the ability to continue playing the same game on both platforms (I think the PSP2 has this feature). So I play MH at home, streetpass will automatically pass the game save data to my 3DS, I go out with my 3DS and continue playing where I left off, then get back home, street pass automatically passes the save info to my console, and I continue playing on it where I left off on the 3DS...

Currently Playing: Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor Overclocked, Professor Layton and the Curious Village

Anticipating: Xenoblade, The Last Story, Mario Kart 7, Rayman Origins, Zelda SS, Crush3D, Tales of the Abyss 3DS, MGS:Snake Eater 3DS, RE:Revelations, Time Travellers, Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney, Luigi's Mansion 2, MH TriG, DQ Monsters, Heroes of Ruin

The DS was supposed to bring this kind of interaction into the Wii. Making it an extra screen where you could see additional information or an extra input control, for example to introduce text.

DS Interaction
The Wii and DS are able to communicate wirelessly with each other to mutual benefit. The DS can be used as a Wii control input; or Wii owners can download demos for the Nintendo DS through WiiConnect24 and send them to the handheld using its download play option.

This hasn't been used that much, but there has been software that has used it like Pokemon, Echoes of Time or Band Hero. I've tested it out in My Word Coach, which only let you play one part of the software in the DS. The input method was much easier to use than the IR, but took a bit of time to set it up.

The problem is that you have to buy two consoles to play one game.

This could be an idea for the next Wii though, where the next Wii controller could have a small, cheap 3d screen attached (as long as they can keep the controller price under $70 I think).

You mean like the DC controller? I think that small would be innefficient. I had no clue Viper got Nintendo talking about their next console. I've tried many times then again I never co-founded a very successful forum. The problem of buying two consoles has never stopped Nintendo in the past, their have been several games on GC and N64 that used the GBC and later GBA in gameplay.

I think using the 3DS in conjunction with the Wii or the next Nintendo console will be an irreplaceble experiance.
