Forums - General Discussion - Taliban stoning to death of man and woman for adultery

Look I know their society seems backwards to us with laws like this, but even so; the law is the law. She knew adultery was wrong in her society and she chose to do it anyways and paid for it.

Maybe there's a society out there where stealing isn't wrong and they think we're retarded for punishing thieves?

This. Just because we think it's wrong it doesn't make it so.

Just because the law is the law does not mean that we shouldn't question it and don't go all "cultural relativity" on this subject. If you really wanted to go down the "maybe there's a society..." route then imagine this; we always say that we should be tolerant of other people's values but what if we encounter a society which doesn't value tolerance. Who are we to then say that they should be tolerant and who are you to say that we should be tolerant of their laws.

Cultural relativity is used far too often as an excuse to let  bad  things happen, however on the other hand we  can't pretend to be so high and mighty ourselves,it's a balance between the two.

At the end of the day,the woman should not have been stoned to death for that, being put in prison would have been more appropriate.

"we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills; we shall never surrender"

Well, murdering someone for being unfaithful is hardly right by any measure. Variations in culture be damned. Hitler didn't think he was doing something wrong, he thought he was doing the world a great service. Does the fact that someone practices something out of belief or tradition make it right? I say no. There is also the tradition in medicine in certain parts of Africa to have sex with infants and small children to cure AIDS, they believe it works. Is that also right, then? Its not even illegal! Murder, genocide and torture are never right, no matter the belief. I'm not an idealist, not even close but of this much I am certain.

Haha, what a brilliant parody of moral relativism! (I hope.)

Why, in England there's been crushing, burning, boiling (alive). And it was entertainment for the masses.

That having been said, I do think sharia law is very cruel and with it being bundled with religion it seems like a sort of Spanish inquisition that's going for way too long. That couple shouldn't have returned on promises, goes without saying.

This is why the Islamic world needs its Renaissance from the Dark Ages its been in for the last 100 years. It needs this continued uprising that started in Tunisia and has engulfed Egypt. It needs to continue to overthrow the powers that were placed in control by European/US leaders after the world wars. Once this dictatorial yolk has been removed, the populace can then begin the journey of recovering their Islam from extremists and return it to what it used to be.

To all those that think this is Islam and argue with me about the Qur'ans Mekkah vs Medina versus STFU. You don't know what your talking about or the history of the region. Extremism and intolerance has only been the controlling factor of the Islamic world for a little over 100 years. For centuries before that women held power and ownership of businesses along with equal rights at home and away as well as full education. Other religions were treated equally and allowed to practice openly as well as being held accountable to their own sets of laws and tried by their own judges/priests/etc.

I pray that US and other western powers push strongly for Egypt to be overthrown and continue this path to a free and open Middle East. Taliban needs to be wiped out. They are the worst of the worst.

They label anything as adultery because it has a harsh punishment.

If you learned the full story, you'd recognize it as simply falling in love, having parents/others say no they cannot marry, then they decide to flee and get married anyways.

That is not adultery. That is not what the Qur'an (and Bible/TaNaKh) says is illegal. That is the natural way of life and their punishment was the crime. Their stoners and judges were murders. They are the ones who will stand before Allah and be punished in hell.

Extremism can NEVER be considered OK simply because its the way of the land. It must be stopped.

Yeah thats messed up... In this position, I'd purposely try to mess up their stoning by trying to karate kick the judge in the face Van Damme style.

Hopefully they shoot me then and there and call it a day
