Um, the Wii shovelware doesn't sell well for the most part, neither did Ninjabread Man.

And it's the fact that the sales are frontloaded that is the proof most gamers dind't enjoy FFXIII (same with Other M and Heavy Rain), while gamers like games like Red Dead Redemption, Just Dance (it's not shovelware just because some people don't like it), and even Epic Mickey.

People did like Heavy Rain and you're going to have to deal with that.

"most gamers" does not mean "no one at all", so you're going to have to deal with that, and try to actually read the context of my comments.

Okay. Most gamers did like Heavy Rain and you're going to have to deal with that.

It has tripled its first week sales in under a year. That's more than I can say for Mass Effect 2 for example. Did most gamers not like Mass Effect 2, the game of the year? Your logic is seriously flawed.

Before  the trailer for FFXIII Versus I would have said yes. But now I think it has a little more left to go.

No, the game didn't have legs, which means the majority of those who bought was due to the marketing. Tripling still isn't an indication of legs, since it's about sales staying at an appreciable level for a time after launch, which didn't happen. Modern Warfare just tripled its launch in total sales, but it had great sales after the launch week, which meant legs.

Plus just because a game gets a lot of acclaim among the gaming community (which I'm not denying, so stop acting like I have to deal with something I already know) doesn't mean the game is actually liked by most gamers outside of it. This applies to lots of games, even those I myself like, and sold well but without legs.

And the marketing was not showing the actual game, but the common "show only the most attention grabbing parts of the cut scenes" ads that a lot of games that open well, but don't have legs, have. If the marketing had showed how the game actually played, and from that the game sold the same even without legs, it would at least show gamers were interested in that kind of game. But that's not what happened.

BTW, it might seem that because so few people speak out against the game, that people therefore like it. That's an aspect of the "false consensus effect". People often ignore things they don't like, and that's what happened among most PS3 gamers when it came to this game (and unfortunately Wii and PS2 owners to Okami as well, even if the game had been given some actual marketing).

So even if it isn't burnt out yet, it's being milked like hell.

Which takes us back to my Pokemon example.

Well Nintendo hasn't announced that one of their main Pokemon games would get loads of loosely related spinoffs before the upcoming main game even proved it was popular enough to warrant it. Or made loads of spinoffs of their biggest game that just convoluted it instead of an outright remake (which the latter happened).

And Pokemon sticks with the tried and true with the main games, while the side games do the experimentation (like Dragon Quest).

So I agree that both are being milked, but Nintendo is doing it right.

@lordtheknight  here we go with your marketing again, lets be real here folks Heavy Rain was NOT made for the mainstream, no way no how. Sony and quantic dream didnt even think that it would sell half a mil let alone what it has done to date. If companies only worried about making games for the masses then we would have nothing but dance, exercise and 2d platforms and FPSs all the time. Thats already seem to happen to one console on the market and the day it happens to the other two, im done with gaming

@rolstoppable not gonna happen, Sony done stole that series right from Ninty and I dont think they'll be letting go anytime soon, but hey hopefully they make a actual good crystal chronicles game

Marketing and making are not the same thing. So that is not a response to my comment.

And it's likely because Sony didn't expect it to do well that they used the deceptive trailer marketing, since they have a movie studio and know about the using marketing to get people's attention without actually showing the movie or game.

Plus it's other people here that are claiming the game is loved all over the place. Those are who you should put those comments about not appealing to the mainstream to.

They don't need to announce them. We know they will arrive, just like we do with the Final Fantasy ones. We know a sequel like game will arrive too. See Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum. Just because they don't announce them it doesn't mean we don't know some will arrive.

And again, Final Fantasy XIII stayed with the tried and tested system other FF games have used. It's your typical Final Fantasy RPG. Versus XIII is an ARPG, XIV is an MMO (If you want to count the MMO's as spinoffs), Dissidia is a fighter, etc. If we want to go into REAL spinoffs... Look at FFVII's spin offs. They experiment.

The gameplay of XIII was not of the typical variety.

@lordtheknight  deceptive marketing campaign??? how so, cause like I said i didnt even see any tv ads in the US so not sure where your getting that from. If Sony was that good at marketing like you suggest they would advertise all their games like that, the people who bought this game was NOT deceived they knew exactly what they were buying and as for those people who said it was loved by all im sure that way hyperbole, how else do you explain the game selling more than a mil and I did not hear that much negativity toward it at least not from the ones who actually played the damn thing

oh and Carl no way in hell did FF13 play anywhere like the other FFs not even close

I've seen the trailers, even if you haven't. Also, just because Cage might not have made the game for the mainstream doesn't mean Sony was going to accept niche sales (even if less than it was). They gave too much money to have the game made to not hype it to hell, and almost none of the hype showed how the game actually played (there was some, but those were very few, like I think one video of the first ten minutes).
