Well Nintendo hasn't announced that one of their main Pokemon games would get loads of loosely related spinoffs before the upcoming main game even proved it was popular enough to warrant it. Or made loads of spinoffs of their biggest game that just convoluted it instead of an outright remake (which the latter happened).

And Pokemon sticks with the tried and true with the main games, while the side games do the experimentation (like Dragon Quest).

So I agree that both are being milked, but Nintendo is doing it right.

They don't need to announce them. We know they will arrive, just like we do with the Final Fantasy ones. We know a sequel like game will arrive too. See Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum. Just because they don't announce them it doesn't mean we don't know some will arrive.

And again, Final Fantasy XIII stayed with the tried and tested system other FF games have used. It's your typical Final Fantasy RPG. Versus XIII is an ARPG, XIV is an MMO (If you want to count the MMO's as spinoffs), Dissidia is a fighter, etc. If we want to go into REAL spinoffs... Look at FFVII's spin offs. They experiment.

The gameplay of XIII was not of the typical variety.

A flashy-first game is awesome when it comes out. A great-first game is awesome forever.
