Forums - Gaming - The Pope talks about violent videogames .... he doesn't like them

does jumping on gombas and eating mushrooms count as violance and antisocial behaviors?

cause I mean what form of entertainment has no violence or trivalization of human sexuality? sure i've just seen a romantic movie where there was no violence or sex... but the heroine is engaged, not married and there's one line where the guy insinuates them going under the sheets, that's against church rules :p (then she dumps her fiancé for an other guys but I guess that's authorised since no vow was taken).

I hate to break the trend here, but the actual words in the OP's quote are NOT objectionable. It says "exalt violence and portray anti-social behavior or the trivialization of human sexuality". If violence and sex are treated maturely with clear consequences and an element of morality, that also makes the film/game a better film/game because the consumer can identify with it and maybe take something away from it.

He's not saying they should be banned, he's saying content creators should be more reponsible when including those elements.

A person can create whatever movie or game they want. It's not their job to teach morals (art is ammoral), especially the kind of "morals" the Catholic Church wants people to learn.

And yes, he is saying they should all be banned. Anything that isn't in line with Catholic teachings should be banned in his opinion (no more people having premarital sex in movies, no more people using condoms in movies, no more gay characters, unless they're psychopats etc.).

The guy is delusional if he thinks his opinion is of any real value.

The pope needs a crate of cola and a good LAN! Lighten up, old man!

And there goes nothing! Making it to the papers and the internet for free every now and then just demands him to make declarations as these.

His audience is already not big fans of such games anyway...

I wouldn't bet these people buy their own words.

But they do have an audience, you know, and you gotta give them what they want.

I somehow think he's not a very big fan of video games though. I mean, Nazis roamed the lands when he was yound (I think he was one of them actually).

And there are people who genuenly do things because he tells them to.

I dont like religion being directed at kids either. It has caused more violence and death than any form of media.

Fuck what the pope thinks.

Yeah, and where have you heard of something like that?

Above: still the best game of the year.

Sex is not an inherently moral or immoral act, and trying to attach inherent morality to it badly simplifies the sexual act and all of the circumstances surrounding it.
