8/10. The battle system is really cool, the music is an awesome mix of piano solos and prog rock, and the story is kind of vague and open-ended which is a pretty nice change of pace from the usual JRPG method of beating you over the head with the bleedingly fucking obvious. The dialogue is pretty hilarious, too, and I really enjoyed dressing up the characters (probably a little too much, actually).

I like what I'm seeing in this post. I think I'm going to get the game now (after I beat Nier and TWEWY).

Cool. It's a very neat and unique JRPG. My only real complaint is that you can customize your guns, but there is really only one "right" way to build them: maximize charge speed and acceleration at the expensive of everything else. All the other attributes are pretty worthless.

8/10, the battle system was one of the most interesting ones I've ever seen and I found the characters were likable and interesting. The plot itself was kind of weird, though it was mostly told in a unique fashion similar to Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, or Wolf's Rain which is something I don't see in games a lot.

Don't compare this pile of horse manure to Cowboy Bebop. This is even worse than when you said Xenosaga had a bad story.

In the manner it's told it's completely valid. The story is told through a series of vignettes that have a loose background connection, just like Bebop and Champloo. And because of that it's kind of hard for me to judge it based solely on its plot because, like Bebop, it's not so much about PLOT as it is character and setting.

And I never said Xenosaga had a BAD story, it was mostly just a disappointment due to too many extraneous characters, an unlikable selfish brat for a heroine who does nothing for the storyline, a convoluted mess that was more concerned about being "deep" than coherent, and of course gobs upon gobs of overly long, overly flashy cut scenes. It was merely above average and when compared to its predecessor it is a complete waste of potential that makes me wonder what happened during development (well, except for Kato not being around obviously being the key ingredient to Xenogears' success). And this is the LAST I will talk about it

Kato?!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF?!!!!!!!!! Kato played a small part in Xenogears' storyline. Takahashi and his wife made most of the storyline. Also, how in the world can you be a fan Xenogears and not the Xenosaga series because of long cutscenes when Xenogears cutscenes were just as long and abundent (I mean.....fu*king hell.....the entire second disc of Xenogears is just one big ass cutscene for the most part)? Also, Xenogears' storyline was FAR more complex then Xenosagas' storyline, so if you found Xenosaga to be too "convoluted" then you shouldn't have gotten Xenogears' storyline at all either. Xenosaga's story is not as good as Xenogears' storyline that for sure, but it' still beats 98% of other jrpg storylines out there for me. It was pretty fu*king amazing in my opinion. I kinda agree with you on Shion, though, that plot twist on her in Episode 3 was out of this world. So she did have some worth in the storyline.

I have already said I am DONE talking about that series. Xenosaga was merely above average at best and due to Kato's absence for that series I attribute its failings to his lack of involvement.

Ok WTF, a pervert bear and a panda standing in front of some woman orgasming over some meat, the bear has some weird fantasies about woman's breasts and spouts out sexual innuendos (bestiality?).

Are ALL JRPGs akin to that?

No, just the dress up feature in the game allows you to do that...that's not how the scene is originally supposed to look like. Also, most RPGs don't have something weird like that :P

What don't you like about RPGs? If you played up to disc 4 of LO, you have to like them somewhat for certain reasons...

I actually have no clue how I withstood the cheese up to the fourth disk. I really don't. Guess I kinda grinded it.. Don't even know what for. I can stand a JRPG it's just when it starts getting obscenely weird, I begin to get bored. When it comes to ROF I think I did one battle, got some random achievement, got confused by some retarded battle system, took the disk out and send it back from where I rented it :p. I LOVE RPG's I just don't really like JRPGs, but I can't really comment on the genre as a whole as I only experienced LO and ROF so far, had tales of vesperia, but didn't get a chance to play it.

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

But Kato barely had any involvment at all with Xenogears. He has said this himself. A few scene here and there, but nothing other then that. You are dead wrong on that front.

Play Tales of Vesperia. Your opinion on JRPGs might after you do. LO is only above average for me, so I don't think that was a good first impression for you.

I'm not sure Kato's involvement would make the story "better".  The one Square game where he wrote the whole story to was Chrono Cross and that game was...very debated to say the least.  Some thought the story was complex and deep, others though it was convoluted and nonsensical.  Some liked the battle system, others hated it.  Some thought the characters were interesting, others though they were bland and underdeveloped.  Literally the only aspects that are universally praised about the game are the soundtrack and art design

All the stories Kato has written after he left Squaresoft have all been seen as being average at best. While The Xenosaga series (minus the people who wanted a Xenogears Part 2 and hate long cutscenes and complex plots), Soma Bringer, and now, Xenoblade have all received universally acclaim from their stories. There are many people who claim that either the Xenosaga series, Soma Bringer, or Xenoblade, or even all of them have the best storyline and cast of characters you'll find an RPG. Hence, the greatness of Takahashi.

Terrible game, even worse than the likes of White Knight Chronicles (at least that had something that resembled a story). Tri-Ace has gone down the crack pipe this generation.

that, word for word.

D: well i liked it >.< :P

my gripes with the game

1: the "story" doesn't "start" till about chapter 7...of 13, even then, after chapter 7, it doesn't continue till chapter 10

2: The battle system is awesome, really awesome...for the first 5mins and then you realise it doesn't evolve, for the rest of the game. You are stuck doing the exact same thing for oh so many hours.

3: The Battle Arena: What the hell? You are doing the exact same thing for 500 fights...500 fights?! Are you kidding me?! No variety, no challenges, nothing just 500 fights of tedium!

4: Because of the lack of story, there is no character progression. e.g Leanne at the start of the game is considered the laughing stock of the team because she sucks...("Leanne goes both ways lulz") by Chapter 10, we are still getting the same jokes about how much she fails eventhough she (for me at least) she's been the MVP in most of my boss fights.

5: Nolan North...love the guy but seriously...? Overkill x_x!!!

This.
