I actually agree with you Puggs, passing NES in 2011 and (if handled right) GBA eventually seems really doable for 360.  Microsoft's done a fantastic job this gen imo.

Though Sony completely screwing up PS3 launch also helped greatly. Still of course they also have done great job.

To be fair, if 360 hadn't existed, PS3 would be in an even worse position now.  PS3 really did ride 360's coattails and get a ton of ports upfront, and the sustained "HD platform" ensured software support kept coming in the face of Wiimageddon.  If 360 wasn't around, how much 3rd party support do you think PS3 would be seeing today?

Well Sony capitialized on the mistakes Sega and Nintendo did in the past.

MS is doing the same now that Sony dropped the ball.

i can see all three systems topping 80mil. Sony and Microsoft will not go to next gen until their systems stop selling. At the current rate sony has a few years to go. Microsoft did really well with kinect and seems to have a few years left as well. Nintendo has said they don't plan on releasing a new console any time soon and as long as they don't I really don't see anything that will prevent the ps3 and 360 from passing the 60, 70, and maybe even 80mil mark.

Nintendo will release their Wii successor in 2012, possibly as early as Q1 2012 for Japan.  But it will probably be PS3-plus spec and not a full generational leap over the HD twins (similar to how 3DS is PSP-plus spec), so MS and Sony will have a little more breathing room and can hold out until as late as 2014 before doing their next gens (though I'd expect one to jump earlier, probably Sony first).  3rd parties will prefer that anyway, no one wants another generational leap (and the massive upfront investment losses that brings) anytime soon, and the possibly of adding a "Wii 2" to their middleware multiplatform driven PC/360/PS3 platform trifecta will be extremely attractive.  Get ready for RE5 Wii 2 edition to sell another 2 million...

As far as passing 80m, I can see how both 360 and PS3 could do it, but it's a stretch for both.  It means almost doubling their current ltds, which is a pretty high standard.  For PS3 especially, it don't really have the critical mass in any region imo (unlike 360 in America) and systems that can't manage top of the heap tend not to have the late gen legs to really carry themselves to the sorts of figures PS3 would need to hit that benchmarket.  There's also the issue of Kinect vs Move, the former being a certified mainstream hit and possible lifetime extender for 360, the latter being a relative non-starter and generally inconsequential to PS3.

srry miss quote nothing to see here

There is truth to this. Had MS thrown in the towel after the original Xbox being a financial disaster, the HD market wouldn't be as successful.

People went with 360 because it was the affordable HD console. If the 360 was not around, the Wii market would be even bigger.

considering the way 3rd parties suport the Wii now PS3 would be in a better position, but still not passing Wii.

Why wouldn't 360 exist? It's just that if Sony would have handled PS3 launch better we would have pretty different sales to look at. Of course this also means that PS3 would be very different machine that it's today (blu-ray drive out ,less power etc). $299-349 launch price and we could have seen real battle between Wii and PS3 with Wii probably still winning but with smaller margin. X360 would have still sold a lot better than original xbox but less than it is now going to sell.

It is good to see the Xbox 360 pass the SNES and double the Xbox 1 in sales with around a year more on the market which isn't as significant. Possibly over the coming 2-3 years in its minimum lifespan it ought to tripple the Xbox 1s LTD totals, break even and take a significant chunk off the losses incurred in launching the Xbox 1 which ought to make their entire Xbox operation an operational success even if they are well past that mark if you considered the value of their Xbox business already as an asset.

Tease.

Ohhh SNES   :)

The whole industry has grown aswell as tapped into new markets. This should come as no surprise.

It's too be expected really, gaming is more popular now then it was then. It was only a matter of time. Now all 360 needs to do is sell a game over 20 million. Modern Warfare 3 might be able to do it.

lol, no.  For example without 360, there'd be no MT Framework (as there'd have been no need at Capcom for a cross-console multi-thread engine/toolset), Dead Rising would've been a PS2 game as originally intended (Lost Planet too maybe) and after RE4 Wii's projection busting sales, RE5 likely would've been a Wii game.  And that's just Capcom's engine, imagine how UE3 would've turned out without 360 driving the console push and the ramifications that'd bring for the hundreds of developers who licensed it.

Honestly, without 360 to lay the HD groundwork, PS3 would've seen a fraction the support it saw and continues to see.  More likely developers would've held off next gen as long as possible and just doubled down on PS2, eventually (and more easily) transitioning to Wii when they couldn't hold out ay longer.
