i drink because it's a social lubricant.

also, drinking lightly or in moderation is better for your health than not drinking at all.

Too true. On both accounts.

The OP sounds like it was written by someone who has a family member or members with a history of alcohol abuse. Keyword there being "abuse."

All things in moderation.

No, none of them do but I just hate the fact that those that do act like idiots when they are drunk.

Even with 'moderation' amounts, what do you find in alcohol drinks? The smell is intolerable and I can only imagine how the drink itself taste like. YUCK!

Some enjoy the taste because they're conditioned to respond to the desired effects of inebriation.

Others develop a refined palate over the years to the point where the subtle differences and notes of their drink(s) of choice make drinking an experience rather than just a means to achieve inebriation.

It's not something someone with no experience in the matter would understand.

Understandable, thanks for your feedback.

Same reason I play video games, have sex, watch sport and play poker.

It's fun.

Don't knock it till you've tried it.

I do want to add that I drink and play poker to increase the chance that I have sex... it's also applies to sports but only on a few selected sports...

This is quite a useless thread. Is your objective to be rude to any person that drinks perhaps?

Especially since what you list is behavior from people that shouldn't drink because they don't know how to drink or are just plain irresponsible. The way you show it would make a lesser man of mind think that this happens to all drinkers.

Oh wait, you're 16.

Ima boy!

I'm so ANGRY you called my thread useless. All I am trying to do is to go in depth to why people mostly those here in vgchartz drink. I know that whatever I say will not change their minds (unfortunately).

So have you actually ever tried an alcoholic beverage or even felt a modicum of its effect? If you haven't than this thread does feel like a complete waste as you're writing from a position of ignorance. Everything you've written so far is knowledge most drinkers already possess.

LOL thanks for the laugh. Yup my thread is full of ignorance. Which is why I asked people a specific question..?

Point is, it's not something that can really be explained and answered to someone that hasn't had appropriate experience. People can explain the effect and why it's enjoyable, but unless you've experienced it, the answers aren't going to explain anything.

And yes, most drinkers do already know the negative effects of alcohol. It's drilled into us (in the UK at least) in the media all the time. It just so happens that most heavy drinkers don't care.

Also just so you know, some mixed drinks taste great.

Don't hate on something you never tried. Drink a fruity drink and your breath will smell like berries.

Right now I am drinking this garbage called "Tilt", only because it is $2.50 a can, has 24oz. of liquid and is 12% alcohol content. Tastes like a blue rasberry blowpop and gets me buzzing nice.

Bet you couldn't tell huh?

LMAO dude you sound like your trying to convince an underage person into drinking while I am trying to do the opposite. while some might have that fruity and appealing taste, beers mostly don't especially those cheap ones you mention. Bud light, Corona etc...

Tilt is a malt beverage, nothing like Budweiser. I hate the taste of beer.

As for convincing you to drink, I did not such thing, I was just showing that your thoughts on the whole situation are wrong.

Not everyone abuses alcohol and it does have great benefits. It's very good for a small buzz but also as a means for lessening you inhibitions for social interactions. Networking sessions become far easier with a drink or two inside the system as you become far more open and find approaching people a lot easier. In social situations, lowered inhibitions just generally means greater fun.

Alcohol also thins the blood which can be beneficial for your heart. A small glass of red wine with your dinner every so often can actually be beneficial (obviously if you get very drunk the liver damage outweighs the benefits).

As for taste, wtf?! Do you know how many different alcoholic beverages are available and the sheer range of different flavours? I know you live in America where the beer is generally pretty poor, but there are so many wines, spirits, cocktails and even alco-pops that there is certainly something out there you'd actually enjoy drinking.

Also, it could be evolution based:

Im aware of that. Wines might be the exception because I've read of some of its benifits but I guess I should of emphasized those that OVER DRINK. Though beers on the otherhand just smell bad.

Don't get mad at me geesh. I doubt it has to do with our monkey side.  ^_^

The monkeys are cute though huh?

Indeed. But I changed my mind I think it does have to do with our monkey side now that I remember how really drunk people act. It's comparable to those cute crazy monkeys.

Also, don't forget that fermentation and the brewing of alcohol (more precisely ethanol) has been with us for thousands of years. I believe the first records of brewery are from Anchient Egypt but virtually every culture has brewed alcohol at some point. It's ingrained into nearly every culture in the world (with the exception of the muslim world, but this was well after alcohol had been introduced in those particular countries).

Is alcohol education really that bad across the pond? Then again it must vary state by state...

Anyway, my personal experience of Americans is they don't drink very much and are actually more sensible than we are in the UK :P

I drink so I can deal with ignorance such that you have displayed here. Before experiencing things firsthand you should not form opinions, unless they are obvious. As others have mentioned drinking is actually beneficial to your health in moderation; more specifically red wine. I enjoy the taste of a nice cold beer at times, and bourbon and coke is very pleasing.

Lol, yeah I know. And I do enjoy a good drink for precisely that reason.

However, on the flip side, alcohol dependency is horrible and one of the hardest addictions to kick, although you'd have to drink a ridiculous amount constantly to get to that state. No way to live your life though.
