Depends on your view on what stress relief is supposed to be. Violent video games keep me from killing people IRL, not everybody is in a stress free working environment, my jobs have a lot of dead lines, just saying.

Whats wrong with violence in games? Its fun and doesnt harm anyone as long as its fantasy.

Where have you been in the last 20 years?
You know what I hate, when parents bitch about violent video games, even though they're the ones that bought the M rated game for there 12 year old kid.
I love gore and violence in fiction, both movies and games. Sometimes it can go overboard but that's mainly when it's presented in either an amateurish (some cheap monster films) or cynical manner (the Saw movies) but seldom am I put off by the high degree of violence itself.

Mario games are far to violent and sadistic and I will not allow my children to take joy in the murder of brainwashed turtles or give them the chance to view the tyrannical behaviour and shotgun weddings of Bowsers day to day lifestyle. With the short amount of time that I've spent with a number of Pokemon games, I can confidently say that I am disgusted with how Nintendo has put educational tools of animal cruelty, child misbehaviour and atheist convertism into games that are primarily marketed to children. The promotion of evolutionary principles, the occult (Gengar, Haunter, hypnotism, mind reading and random magical occurrences) and extreme animal violence are off putting and it also encourages children to travel alone in a dangerous world filled with evil organisations and dangerous creatures.I do not want them to throw the family cats into battle with each other, I do not want them follow false ideologies (evolution/wicka), I do not want them to throw themselves into danger at such a young age and I do not want them to treat animals as possesions. I do not want my children to play Pokemon. Kirby games glorify cannibalism, cross dressing and furry behaviour. I do not want any of this negative qualities put towards my children and that can only be achieved my avoiding Kirby games. I have no desire of letting my children watch a male blob (who is pink) dress up as a princess or a gorilla to satisfy his sexual fetishes. I also do not want cannibalism brought into my home and Nintendo's openness with Kirby consuming the flesh of his species is pretty disturbing. Nintendo games are far to violent for my children and the ideologies they put into their games are ones that I cannot allow my children to view, hear or play. I have been disgusted with their output as of lately and so I will use other manufacturers as a source for my children's gaming needs. Medal of Honour takes a realistic approach to the hard fought war that our soldiers fight for ever day and it condemns violence and only shows the sacrifices that have to be made to help mankind. Little Big Planet takes a colourful approach to creation and it also invokes imagination, hard work and patience over unneeded violence and hostility. Flower encourages the fight for freedom and promotes humbleness and a wider scope of a world view. I will be purchasing my children's games from other publishers from now on. Most of them do not follow pot dream concepts. |

I thought about buying a 360 but that was until I downloaded a lot of demos on a relatives' 360 to try out. Call me 'weak sauce' all you want but I couldn't stomach all the vulgarity, violence, morbidity a lot of the games offer. Quite honestly I was disgusted and shocked of what I saw. The realistic graphics made it all the more worse. Violence was in games was cool when I was a kid when Mortal Kombat came out, which was very controversial, but now I'm a grown man and I would actually feel embarrassed to play like Dante's Inferno or a game where you have a chainsaw as an arm. Seriously, is this what many kids are playing these days? How can low brow stuff like this pass as entertainment these days? Have people lost their decency, morals and basic sensibilities? Is this the type of garbage teenage boys are feeding themselves with hours a week? Have people become so desensitized that they don't even blink an eye to it anymore? Then I hear stories from friends that most kids online curse you out and talk trash with harsh expletives. Surely America is declining. One thing for sure I would never allow my kids to have a 360/PS3. I wouldn't allow them to touch with a 20 foot pole. |
The unfortunate reality is that AAA, high profile games have been far more graphically violent and vulgar starting way back last gen. Some of them aren't made for children, but for man-children. Some generally are adult without going over the top (Mass Effect series is a good example), but most just want to push the envelope.
Yeah, it is disappointing overall, because so many of them ARE the AAA titles. As kids in the 8-16 bit era, those kinds of games you could play as adults or kids. Not so anymore. 'Kids' games are made for reeeeeally young kids and aren't typically AAA efforts. And adults like me that find themselves turned off more and more by graphic violence and vulgarity are left wondering how much longer gaming will appeal to me.
You're not alone.

Oh and I hate this "Im mature and I dont like violence" attitude that a lot of people seem to have over here.
