Forums - Sales - Square Enix has embarrassed themselves this gen.

@kyren  then that man deserves a raise cause he seems to be the ONLY one who knows what the hell they're doing over there (and whoever decided to buy Eidos, good job)

@Joecool7  lets not forget that whole damn FF4 after years crap. They didnt even freaking continue!!! it was probably for the best it was supposed to 4 episodes for 10 bucks each.  40 bucks for a 2d RPG, kinda steep. and the PSP is getting an enchanced version of the original and the after years and some bonus content

First off, there haven't been nearly enough releases this gen like the last one to make the comparison. And besides, they enjoyed high profits last year.

Now, overall this gen, they made some good, and bad decisions:

- The purchase of Eidos was smart.

- They're hitting it off well in the handheld markets.

- The long development of FFXIII (and the excuses afterwards), FF Versus XIII, and DQX are just ridiculous.

- Their Wii efforts are so half-assed.

- Last but not least, why the hell are they trying to penetrate (no pun intended) the 360 market so hard this gen?

Microsoft give (or should I say gave) developers incentive pay to create timed exclusives for their console. Square-Enix do like money. :P

I honestly can't believe developers just think of the short-term.

Rockstar: Announce Bully 2 already and make gamers proud!

Kojima: Come out with Project S already!

@huaxion90  why are you surprised MS is an US company and a good amount of us Americas love the things fixed as quickly and as easily as possible. look at our auto industry

They way I see, Square-Enix Final Fantasy team specialized in HD gaming and seems that they lost something in the transaction, as FF XIII and XIV are both below average. However, the DragonQuest team is taking care of Nintendo. DragonQuest IX was pretty good and had great sales. I expect DQX to do pretty well too.

Just for comparison, here's the internally developed Square games this versus last gen on home consoles this far into the cycle... this leaves out Enix, since they really never had any internal R&D before the merger, and counts only games that actually saw western release...

Square / Square Enix on home consoles (2000-2005)

  • Final Fantasy X (PS2) 2001
  • Kingdom Hearts (PS2) 2002
  • Unlimited SaGa (PS2) 2002
  • Final Fantasy X-2 (PS2) 2003
  • Final Fantasy XI: Online (PS2) 2003
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles (GC) 2003
  • Front Mission 4 (PS2) 2003
  • Musashi: Samurai Legend (PS2) 2005
  • Romancing SaGa: Minstrel Song (PS2) 2005
  • Kingdom Hearts II (PS2) 2005
Square Enix on home consoles (2005-2010)
  • Final Fantasy XI: Online (360) 2005 *PS2 port
  • The Last Remnant (360) 2008
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (Wii) 2009 *DS port
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers (Wii) 2009
  • Final Fantasy XIII (PS3/360) 2009/2010
  • Mario Sports Mix (Wii) 2010

....meanwhile, handhelds have been a pretty different story...

Square /Square Enix on portable consoles (2001-2007)

  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance (GBA) 2003

Square /Square Enix on portable consoles (2004-2010)

  • Mario Hoops: 3-on-3 (DS) 2006
  • Front Mission (DS) 2007 *port of PS1 remake
  • Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII (PSP) 2007
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates (DS) 2007
  • Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift (DS) 2007
  • Dissidia Final Fantasy (PSP) 2008
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (DS) 2009
  • Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (PSP) 2010
  • Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (PSP) 2010 *SFC remake
...of course if we throw in downloadables, the consoles even out slightly more in quantity (though clearly not resources) and weirdly, this seems to be where their Wii support has really gone (in favor of 360/PS3's downloadable services)...
Square Enix on console DD services (2005-2010)
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a King (Wii) 2008
  • Crystal Defenders R1 (Wii) 2009
  • Crystal Defenders R2 (Wii) 2009
  • Yosumin Live! (XBLA) 2009
  • Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord (Wii) 2009
  • The Tales of Bearsworth Manor: Chaotic Conflicts (Wii) 2010
  • The Tales of Bearsworth Manor: Puzzling Pages (Wii) 2010

Considering the Wii games they have made they should be extremly satisfied with the sales

If it isn't turnbased it isn't worth playing   (mostly)

And shepherds we shall be,

For Thee, my Lord, for Thee. Power hath descended forth from Thy hand, That our feet may swiftly carry out Thy command. So we shall flow a river forth to Thee And teeming with souls shall it ever be. In Nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritūs Sancti. -----The Boondock Saints

Meh the quality of their games dropped a lot so it was to be expected... but they did gave me Chaos Rings for the iphone which is the best jrpg this gen..

I wish they would have released something like that on the XBL or PSN. The game would sell like crazy. It's only $13.00 for the IPhone. This is the kind of stuff we are looking for from SquareEnix.

FFXIV alone makes them look like complete jokers. despite me actually enjoying FF13 it was still under par and the first 10 hours was horribly designed. whoever was in charge of development needs to be sacked.

I think FXIII did pretty well, the game sucked, but it sold pretty well. So did Dragon Quest and other portables. They should had focused more on Wii though. They should have like 3-4 Wii JRPGS by now.

"If you get a call from Square Enix anytime soon asking if it can borrow some money and maybe crash on your couch for a couple of weeks, don't be surprised. The Japanese publisher that's been a leader in the RPG market for years with series like Final Fantasy and Chrono Trigger is reporting monumental loses of 12 billion yen over the 12 month period that ended this month (May 2011). It's a pretty monumental loss considering they'd predicted that they would make a profit of 1 billion yen."

Nearly 6 months later, that paragraph and the following link prove to confirm what I knew all along.

Hopefully, even without FF Versus 13, Square can redeem themselves at this week's E3.
