Forums - Sales - Square Enix has embarrassed themselves this gen.

Man Square you could have done far better on Wii if you just supported the platform with quality software. CrystalBearers was one of the biggest piles of crap I've played. I mean seriously if you stuck with the CrystalChronicles gameplay and didn't decide to go after action adventure audience and stuck to the RPG audience the game would have sold way better.

Honestly I'm suprised Square sold that many copies of their games on Wii considering all of them are spin-offs or inferior to their prior installments. Hopefully Square will give Nintendo the support they deserve next gen.

Your argument is really stupid. FF X FFX-2 FFXII sales add up to be more than half of the 45 Million you claim from the PS2. Add another 6 million in Kingdom Hearts series, 5 million in Dragon Quest 5 Dragon Quest 8. 2 Million for Star Ocean.  The rest of the sales come from the shit-ton of games that S-E released that bombed that were NEW or small IPS, example grandia, front mission, saga series, musashi, the bouncer, full metal alchemist.... does that seem familiar? Final Fantasy XIII along with SO have sold as expected, and so have the new IP bombs (infinte undiscovery, last remnant, front mission evolved, nier). It's obvious their sales have droppped, because they haven't released 3 main Final fantasy games.... on the same console.. nor dragon quest games, nor a proper kingdom heart game.... point is, only established series sell!!!!. so your argument is flawed.

Duh, they haven't realeased as many console games. Only FFXIII is the big one, last generation FFX,. FFX-2, FFXII, Dragon Quest VIII, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2...compared to just FFXIII (which already sold more than all in PS2 generation except X).How wouldn't console sales be down around 66% from previous generation if they have only made 1 big game for consoles so far? This has nothing to do with not being on the Wii.

The other fact is Square-Enix is mainly a hand held developer, thats where their best quality lies and where a lot of their sales come from now. Do the comparison again after they have released more than just 1 high profile console game.

Versus has a chance at boosting the software by ~5M in PS360 region, especially if it goes multiplat.. Although thinking about it.. I haven't seen that many games by them, FFXIII being an exception. By the way isn't Eidos part of SE too?

Disconnect and self destruct, one bullet a time.

I think the Wii's 'problem' when enticing SE's support was that it didn't really offer a specific market. What i mean is like, SE are either going to make a game focused at their core Japan market - where it makes more sense to develope it on the PSP / DS where costs are cheaper and userbase is bigger or SE are going to go for a global market with a big-budget HD game. I think they're just finding it hard to find any kind of formula that 'fits' in with what the Wii offers.

I think SE are still doing alot of things right there, they're getting far more out of the handheld market then any other third party and they seem to be refining their list of big-budget HD hitters to games that are for the most part successful. They are missing a trick with their Wii sales but I do understand their problem, as whenever I think what they could do with the Wii I normally then just think they'd make more with it just being a handheld game.

I think their challenge going forward now is adjusting to a few years with a smaller handheld market to draw from, afterall the 3DS looks alot more competitive on the software side of things and PSP2 is nowhere to be seen yet,

Total Software Sales PS2 DS PSP PS3 360 Wii
  45m 25.5m 9.25m 9.3m ~7.25m ~1.85m (LOL)

You may be wondering, why do those PS3/360 numbers look so small? It is because they are.

As much as I wanted to credit Square Enix with publishing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare to help their asses out, I only gave them the Japanese sales they deserve credit for. Wii numbers are a major embarrassment. SE got 75% of those sales on the Gamecube last gen with only one game.

Damage Control Man #1 would say, "Well, Japan has had a major handheld focus this gen. Square Enix is no different. Thier DS/PSP sales surely make up for their console decline!"

Wrong.

Compared to last gen, their presence on consoles has dropped 66% in terms of software sales. Lucky for the company, the ENIX side of things pulled much more weight than the Square side. Without Dragon Quest, minus 13 million units (DS). Nothing is cool about that.

If you add up the PSP, DS, PS3, 360 and Wii sales (which are all from this gen), you get more than 45m.

This of course doesn't take into account GBA, GC or original Xbox sales (were there any?), but I can't remember any big sellers released in it (as far as I know, they released mostly

I know things are worst for them this gen, but the numbers aren't all there and DQX will surely help things a bit.

To sum up: Things are bad, but not as bad as you make them out to be.

Considering that the Wii has over 50% of the market and that the Wii has so far not received any large support from SE, as opposed to the PS3 and Xbox360, you can't really say it's "bull shit". Because it ain't. Not a single good game on Wii from them.

<snip>

when did this happen?

Pretty soon after the Wii launched in Japan. The percentage above refers to current gen home console market share in Japan.

ah, that makes sense

Last year was SE's best year in their history, posting record profits / revenue, so I don't think things are 'bad' overall. Only really FFXIV has let them down in the past few years, albeit it's a pretty epic bomb.

First off, there haven't been nearly enough releases this gen like the last one to make the comparison. And besides, they enjoyed high profits last year.

Now, overall this gen, they made some good, and bad decisions:

- The purchase of Eidos was smart.

- They're hitting it off well in the handheld markets.

- The long development of FFXIII (and the excuses afterwards), FF Versus XIII, and DQX are just ridiculous.

- Their Wii efforts are so half-assed.

- Last but not least, why the hell are they trying to penetrate (no pun intended) the 360 market so hard this gen? Really dumb decision.
