Forums - Gaming Discussion - Why is X360 selling worse than the original Xbox?

This is probably common knowledge, but as most of you know the X360 is not selling as well as the original Xbox did during this time period. Why do you suppose that is? While I'm sure Halo will ship some consoles as will Gears of War, but they are not going to create a miraculous difference over night. In fact I don't know of anyone who's waiting for Halo, but quite the opposite most Halo and Xbox fans in my surroundings already seem to have an X360. So who are these people who haven't bought the X360 yet, but bought the original? Thoughts? One reason I can think of is that those who bought the original Xbox initially for the graphical and power difference (obviously not for it's big game library [/sarcasm]) are not really loyal to any specific console. So some of them may very well be waiting wait for PS3 instead. Which could explain why less people buy the Xbox 360 compared to the Xbox. Another reason could be that gamers are still not convinced by the next-generation and plan too wait longer. What are your thoughts?

Because it's $400, most games are $59, and Halo is missing. Xbox 1 was $300, with games at $49, and it had one of the best FPS games to launch with. Another problem is the way the 360 plays Xbox 1 games, its not clear which games will work, and many probably don't do enough digging on xbox.com to find the list of compatible games, or they don't have a high speed internet connection to get the updated list. But I think the primary reason is the 360's price, if it had Halo 3 many people might buy it primarily for that, but without it many might just wait for a price drop, and/or Halo 3's release.

X360 sales for this holiday are quite good but the mid-year sales are simply poor ....selling 8 million in 13 months isnt a great feat either.Once the sales return to normal after the christmas the remaining 2 million consoles will be sold in some 4 months at best ....so to reach teh 10 million mark we must wait to april in the best scenario possible .By april the Playstation 3 will be around 7 million consoles sold and the Wii probably even higher .I think the X360 willbe the third of the next generation consoles war as soon as end summer 07 .

No when the Xbox was launched it was 500 I think. If it wasnt then my friend got ripped off because he paid 500 for an origanal Xbox. Anyways Im a Sony fan but I think the 360 isnt selling that well because people are moving to the Wii, Thats what I think. I think the same will happen with the PS3 people will play the Wii insted. Well thats until they release GTA, MGS, and FF. Japan will start buying PS3's when thats released. Japan will never buy 360's though.

Yea it's not looking great for the 360. First of all noteably in Japan it's doing worse than the Xbox by close to 100,000 consoles in the same time limit. X360 sales no matter how much the hype has been is still doing worse than Xbox. America is still one to wait and see but I think many are right. The fanbase has pretty much already bought the 360. Like if Halo 3 were to be released today you'd probably see a 100% sell out of the installed base but really it won't push out any new buyers. Same thing happened with Gears. It wasn't a system seller and neither will Halo. Outside of the loyal MS fanbase Halo isn't that big of a game. Like I think a lot of people bought Halo 2 due to the hype and Halo 1 due to the hype of Halo 2. Yet many were probably dissappointed. But yes 360 has some game issues. The only games that sale on it tend to be Halo. So that'll definetly hurt it until Halo comes out. But 360 needs a system seller. It only has games that's in the area that only already owners of the consoles will buy. It's the same problem the Xbox had. Only providing to a certain class of gamer. Limiting itself. But overall I think the biggest loss for the 360 is in Europe and the rest of the world. With such an open market they should have been screaming sales yet the DS has been taking all the buys and either the rest is waiting for PS3 or buying Wii. 360 will lose Europe soon enough.

I was takink in count the estimations of production of 6 million by end march ....if Sony cant achieve these numbers then things would change for sure but I dont think this objetivo is very far from reality .Sony produces its own hardware and in the Playstation 3 they have also hired Asustek and another company ....once they have the production proceess controlled (and right now they seem to have improved significantly ) they can ramp up production way faster than Microsoft or Nintendo .As for the total number of consoles sold for 31 dec I dont know ...1,5 million is a good guess but I am hearing from the boards of many sites news about massive shipments right now and a strategy by some stores to sell many units the 31 that they have been stocking up ...plus in Japan the strong week is this next week not this one and they have saved consoles for then ...maybe they wont be far off of the 2 million consoles they expected to sell .

Well this week in Japan was the biggest one, the next two will get progressively less. I can't see Sony selling 4.5m PS3s in the next 3 months to be honest, even if they manage to ramp up production

Why ? If they are selling 1,5 million in one month and a half with all the production problems they have they could even without solving the same problems sell 3 in 3 months .If they are ramping up production 4,5 seems a reasonable number .

Now that you say that you might be right. Yes Halo 2 sold very well first month but after that sales werent that big. GTA:SA still sells very well after like 2 years after being released maybe even 3 years.

They may have sold 1.5 mil in approx. 45 days, but they sure as hell didnt produce those all those consoles in that time. Most of those were produced months beforehand, just like the 360 I purchased on launch day was made in september, thats 2 months before launch. Unfortunatetly my PS3 doesnt have the date of manufacture on the back, but I'm sure is was atleast produced in october. And just because they can ramp up production doesnt mean the'll have more units. Yeild problems have already been a source of delays, and if the blue laser shortage continues, all the cells they produce wont have a bluray drive to go with them. However, all this hopla about production only makes a major difference short term, namely the holiday season as in the coming months all these problems will vanish with a drop in demand and increase in supply. Even if Sony can produce enough units to hit 4.5mil doesnt mean people will buy them, and I see that as being their real problem for the next 6 months - supply means nothing without demand. And to the person who said their friend paid 500 bones on an Xbox; he was either ripped off or bought a package deal, it was 300
