Forums - Gaming - What i miss about classic games(before the online era)

I miss 8 and 16 bits anthem. At that time, the musician in games had to do wonders with such restriction. Then, cometh the CD-ROMS, and music was not so catchy.

I miss the finite lives, the insane difficulty, the hundreds of levels, the continues, the infinite live cracks ^^

I hate forced updates, non pick up and play games, useless unskippable cinematics that goes for ages (MGS4 !!!)

I miss games where you could save wherever you want on your computer. I curse the devs for that nowadays.

As for Nintendo I wouldn't call them the ultimate leader on the local co-op front. They do a lot for it, but they're not even close the only company how supports it.

Fact is there are tons of good local co-op games on HD consoles and many people, as we can see it in this thread, apparently have no freakin clue of how many there really are.

You are taking my point to hyperbole for no apparent reason. I never even remotely claimed no one else was doing it. However stick a list of games released with local co-op by all companies involved next to each other and Nintendo is going to win by a mile or more. It is little surprise to as that was the initial goal of the Wii. Other companies are absolutely on board, but Nintendo spear headed it, and continues to put out the most games with a focus on it.

Microsoft is certainly trying to push down the same path with what we have seen of Kinect. Sony continues to make a few steps in that direction, but I haven't seen much substantial from them. Definitely moving more towards that end though.

Simply because they have more studios overall.

Though quality wise I wouldn't even be so sure about that....

Some of us are married and would sometimes like to play a game together. My wife doesn't like racing or fps games which leaves slim pickings this gen.

Does anyone know any rpg's you can play co-op on the same screen? We don't have time for WoW anymore. (definately not enough to justify paying 60 dollars a month for 2 accounts)

Or any good adventure games like Syberia on console? Heavy rain was not a success, she didn't want to play anymore after Jason got lost in the mall and hit by a car.

First of all, it's only $30 US a month for two accounts for WoW.

If that is still (understandably so) more than you want to pay (I get my money's worth but I play A LOT) then the only other thing I can think of atm is to buy a turn based strategy game and make it co-op. I played all the way through Fire Emblem - Radiant Dawn and half way through hard mode with a friend as 'tactical advisor'

Yes I was thinking of the time when we still had our Everquest accounts going as well. Expensive hobby. It's hard to pull the plug on something you've played for 3 years.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2
Borderlands (though there's still a lot of FPS in it)
Fable 3
Sacred 2
DeathSpank
DeathSpank Thongs of Virtue
Castle Crashers

as far as adventure games go, look up what Telltale Games developed on XBLA/PSN. (Sam & Max, Wallace & Gromit, Tales of Monkey Island and soon Back to the Future)
Otherwise also take a look at the remakes of the Monkey Island series by Lucasarts or get Fahrenheit on the Xbox Originals channel of your 360.

Castle crashers looks great for short bursts after the baby has gone to sleep. Rocketman axis of evil was good mindless fun as well.

I didn't know fable 3 had campaign co-op? splitscreen?

We played fahrenheit a long time ago. The 3d style of sam&max and tales of monkey is not very appealing. The remakes of monkey island are pretty good though. I love that you can switch back to the original graphics at any moment, and great commentary track.

I wish Benoit Sokal would hurry up and finish Syberia 3 :) been looking forward to that for a long time.

Ugh I got all excited about sacred 2 until I read this

"The view is zoomed out incredibly high overhead, no matter how close you are to you partner.  The game is certainly playable in bird's eye view, but you miss all of the eye candy, and important details can be hard to see."

Ok not a big problem.

"Another issue is that only one player can manipulate menus at a time.  In a game where you are constantly trying new slots, using runes, scrapping excess junk, etc. there is a lot of waiting around for your partner to finish."

"There is one problem with local co-op that, to be frank, is almost a deal breaker.  You cannot trade items with a local partner.  Unbelievable as it may sound, if your high elf picks up a wicked set of wings that would be perfect for your buddy's Seraphim, there's no way to trade them."

:(

Splitscreen = less money

Think about it, instead of 4 people buying 4 copies of the same game, you have 4 people playing 1 game together.

Divide and conquer :)

nah Fable 3 "only" provides local co-op on the same screen, though I don't know if there is any traditional RPG or action RPG that has a splitscreen option. Only RPG that I know has it is Borderlands, which is of course an FPS hybrid.

About Sacred 2, maybe you should look up if they patched some of the things you mentioned.
