As long as the game is good the graphics are not that much of a concern to me. I still enjoy playing older games.

I'm a bit of a graphics whore tbh.
The following games (in order) impressed me greatly:
God of War III
Uncharted 2 (and Uncharted for that matter)
Wipeout HD Fury
Most games however have been slightly disappointing. I don't understand the praise heaped on Killzone 2 for its graphics. The intro is mind blowing, but in game doesn't impress m.e at all.
MGS4 was the first PS3 game I played and it definitely impressed me a lot. Just the shadows pissed me off.
Just my 10cents
I guess i'm the only one who wasn't impressed by the likes of Uncharted 2, most of these exclusives use trickery in lighting and bloom effect to make them look better than they actualy do. I loved its art style but at the same time i wouldn't call it it the best because its just one look, while i love that look i prefer less coloring and cartoonish looks. LitttleBigPlanet was another game that looked great.
I still think Mass Effect 2 has the best facial designs of any game on consoles this gen, Alan Wake is probably worthy of note too, it had some good faces.

@ Zari
So Uncharted 2 looks better than it actually looks?
Uncharted 2 is actually still technically one of the most impressive games out there. Great lighting, picture quality and animation in addition to great acting performances, art direction, art polish, etc.
A cartoonish look is good art direction for various game gernes, but not technically demanding. A Mario style game is better suited with cartoon style graphics with a lack of details and simplified gaming world, but that's not demanding technically for modern day standards.
Other games such as racing sims or horror games are far more effective with realistic graphics, such games I grearly prefer to play in stereoscopic 3D with a good surround audio setup, adding greatly to creating an immersive atmosphere. For games such as Mario Kart, Pacman, Zelda, etc IMO this isn't that important.
I was fine with SNES graphics. In fact SNES graphics give you that "feeling".
Playing Super Castlevania 4 and Super Metroid just feel so cool, I haven't had an experience like that since the SNES.

Wii 79/150 million
Xbox 360 47.7/73 Million
PS3 43.6/69 Million
Yeah, I'm reasonably satisfied and could really live on with this generation of consoles if I had to. The PS360 have shown to be very capable with games like Just Cause 2, Uncharted 2, Halo: Reach, God of War III, Alan Wake and so on. No, they're not top of the line, but they still do well, and we continue to squeeze them for more power.
However, I still want to see a new generation. Not necessarily one that makes a huge jump in graphics, but the additional power still adds to what is possible. Games like Red Faction and L.A. Noire rely on the power in the PS360 for being able to build the gameplay they want, and I want to see what can be done beyond that. We just need some extra juice to be able to make the characters in L.A. Noire that much more real, and make environment in Red Faction that much more interactive.
Not to mention doing it all in 3D!
But in the end, it still very much comes down to the art and presentation to make a good looking game. Games like LittleBigPlanet, Valkyria Chronicles and Critter Crunch look fantastic and play very well, despite the fact that they're not really pushing graphical boundaries.

I was underwhelmed when I first used my PS3. The graphical difference between the PS2 and PS3 is really small. The jump in graphics wasn't as big as the PS1 to PS2. The majority of PS3 games look like PS2 games unless you play them on a HDTV. |
Well, It's not like the difference between PS2 and PS3 isn't big. The problem was that I got a used to PS3 graphics before even getting a PS3 (because I bought a PC). That may be why I didn't get as impressed as when I saw the difference between PS1 and PS2, but the difference is there. Maybe I shouldn't have used the Viking vs God of War II example... or maybe I just don't know how to express myself xD
| Joelcool7 said: I agree with many users I am satisfied with the graphical output of all three platforms. Infact like others I was satisfied last generation with GameCube and X-Box. I love graphics but they just don't justify a new console or a deterent to any consoles. My favorite console is still my Wii with my 360 being my second favorite. I'd have to say judging by which consoles I like my favorite is the weakest second favorite the second weakest and my least favorite the strongest. Honestly I own a PC and prefer consoles. I think judging by your post that you are a graphic's whore. In other words graphics are all that matter to you. MGS4 is a beautiful game and I can't see myself asking for any better then that. Its almost photorealistic. Am I satisfied with the consoles? Hell yah! |
@bolded
I also prefer consoles because for some reason I get really bored on PC and as I said before, the PC barely has any games I like... most of them are console exclusive (only on consoles).
And I'm not a graphic's whore, as I said before, I gave God of War III (the game I consider has the best graphics on current gen consoles) an 8.5/10 and I gave Nier (this one has Xbox 1 graphics) a 10/10. If you make me pick 1 of those games, I'll pick Nier because it's a fantastic game with a memorable story and memorable characters, excellent soundtrack, etc. Hell, I'd even pick many PS2 or PS1 games over God of War III xD. Graphics aren't all that matter to me.

@bolded
Like I said to the other guy, PC gaming is boring for me too so don't worry, I won't ask you to switch xD.
I'll be satisfied when a game like KZ3 can have 2 player split screen at 60 frames per second.
