Forums - Nintendo - Wii Camera Control

I just watched IGN's Epic Mickey Review and the reviewer's main gripe seemed to be a poor camera. I've had my issues with camera control or lack thereof in Wii games many a time as well. The solution I've always thought would be effective would be to use the IR pointer to control the camera with a cursor ala Wii FPS games albeit with less sensitivity. The Wii Remote's pointer is probably the controller's coolest function that truly sets it apart from normal controllers yet it seems to be grossly underutilized in most games. Is it that difficult to implement it in 3rd person games or something? What am I missing?

PS - Happy Thanksgiving to everyone here on VGchartz.

edit: nvm

I agree, most games have underutilized it. Youd think itd be used to replace the Wii's lack of second control stick, but alas its not necessarily the case.

I agree, the pointer needs to get more attention as the camera control, unfortunaly most games seem to use it as a gimmick instead,

i think Wiimote needs an analog, not a lot of developers seem to use the pointer the right way...

It's not hard to implement good camera control in a Wii game as there are two good ways to do it, unlike with a traditional controller that really only leaves you with the right analog stick as viable option.

The first one would be the use of the d-pad (example: Okami) which effectively works like an analog stick only without being analog. Camera control doesn't have to be analog accurate, so the lack of it really isn't an issue.

The second way is to use the pointer to control the camera which is best done by having to hold down a specific button in order to make the camera move (example: C in both Tomb Raider games), otherwise the player could unintentionally change the camera angle way too often.

Like in No More Heroes!

I've never really experience bad camerawork with any of my Wii games.  Galaxy's camera IMO was really good, just not as 'free' as I would like.

My friend however always claims that the Simpson's Game on Wii has (in the voice of the Comic Book Guy) the 'Worst Camer Ever!'

Honestly, in my opinion changing the camera view with the D-Pad or the pointer is not as good as using an analog stick to do it, that's why in my opinion the lack of a second stick is a step back from the GC controller. (also, the lack of analog triggers)
