Forums - Sales - Biggest gen ever or will every gen outdo the last?

As far as how many games this gen will be in the top 10 opening weeks I'll go with 9. I think Pokemon Black/White, and the next Call of Duty (on 360 at least, if not both systems), will outdo Halo 2. I don't think San Andreas will be leaving the top 10 though.

I don't we will continue to see this many new games next gen, i.e at the end of next gen 9/10 of the top spots won't be held by games from that generation. I think 5/6 of the games in the top 10 will be Call of Duty titles after next year. But I think some fatigue will set in for the franchise over the next few years, and by next gen it won't have the same opening week strength. This is just my guess, but I don't think there will be another franchise with the same sales pattern. Instead of having one or two huge franchises like Call of Duty, I think there will be more franchises that do Assassin's Creed like numbers (~800k-1 mil opening weeks per platform).

Those are not the top selling games though. I seriously get annoyed with this weekly, first day sales as they are not really an indication on the best selling games this Generation.

Alright then, 9 out of 20 most sold games of all time is also from this gen, 8 of the top 20 most sold games in America are from this gen, 11 of the top 20 games in Japan are from this gen, 11 of the top 20 games in EMEAA are from this gen.

The fastest selling games to 20 million are all from this gen, 11 of the 12 fastest selling games to 15 million are from this gen, 16 of the top 19 fastest selling games to 10 million are from this gen etc.

I can go on.

I actually think that we're approaching a sort of bubble, with how games sell. Development costs are skyrocketing, not in line with the actual increase in sales. I'm not sure whether next gen or the one after that, but I do think there will be a crashing down, back to earth, if you will. Obviously, gaming won't die, but I do think that costs will come back in line, and with games being less flashy, we may lose some of the people who buy on the 'wow' factor, thus making sales smaller. The costs will come down enough, though, so that games can still be considerably more profitable.

People said the same thing about movies. However we still get that year after year creep in production costs and special effects. In spite of this it is possible to make a movie which is 1/10th to 1/100th of the production budget of a blockbuster and still earn revenues in excess of 100M. This however is less likely than games because there isn't that same option of selling a cheap game through the same channels which makes considerable quantities of money. It is just a different market, the money tends to pool at the higher end of the spectrum of 'quality' much more so than movies. The real question is how the game publishers are going to better monetise their high selling games so the idea of pay to play multiplayer and DLC comes into play.

 Next Gen

In terms of total software/hardware sales I don't think this will be the biggest gen at all. Console gaming has A LOT of room to expand. In terms of number of games with amazing sales I think this might end up being one of the best of all gen. This is because all 3 consoles and the nintendo ds are selling well enough for their big releases to sell very well, which almost never happens. I expect in the future, one console will dominate again and the "big" games from the second and third place consoles won't be able to sell as well as they did this gen.

Next gen will outdo current gen like many have said.  First week sales aren't shit and you should know according to Nintendo.   Nintendo likes to sell shit over time.  Would you rather sell a shitload at first then wither down or would you rather sell decently ever week overtime.  Current gen isn't shit to what the future beholds.  More and more people will become involved into gaming through blue ocean strategy, etc...   Give my parents/grandma NES controller and have them try Mario 1,2,3 and fail.  Then give my grandma the Wii controller and see her do decently at bowling...    My grandma who isn't doing so good right now ( she did pretty damn good for beginner at Wii Bowling) actually enjoyed playing video games.   Video games have room to expand and they will expand under the shitty economic times we live in.

9/10 are Halo, CoD or GTA. Holy crap.

I 2nd this.

It's amazing that more people buy COD year after year.

Pokemon Black and White will most likely make it into that chart when they get released here. Monster Hunter 3rd Portable stands a good chance as well, not quite sure about it though?  Obviously Modern Warfare 3 is going to be there.

So yeah every gen will out do the last because more people are playing video games. =)

@dunno001, about your sig, that game can only exist for you if a team of the best devs in the world were able to get your fantasies straight out of your head as blueprint. @Gilgamesh, good point. I imagine that in the next 50 years, video games will be like the Matrix movies. You will feel like you are in the game, in the character's body, until you switch the game off.

What Halo 3 did is much more impressive then what any COD game did in it's first week. Why? Because in 2007, the install base was tiny. COD has had a MUCH bigger install base to sell to. When you factor that into it and adjust...Halo 3 would have sold something like 20 million copies in it's first week.

Nothing has ever come close to Halo 3's sales.

Actually, false. Super Smash Bros. Melee on the Gamecube had around a 90% attach rate at one point. Nothing has come close to that.
