Nintendo did try to get into the more 'core' market in the GC days with Geist and Eternal Darkness without success.
It's not their forte as Reggie noted. Mario Paintball would be hugely successful and I don't know why they havn't done that. Super Smash Bros FPS would be even more epic.
Retro could but I'd rather see Nintendo buy up some great FPS studio (not High Voltage... no offense HVS). However at this point no FPS (except Mario FPS) is going to sell gangbusters on Wii. Goldeneye is the best possible bet and it won't have amazing sales either.
Any 'core' FPS from Nintendo should come next gen with comparible graphics to the competition and a full-featured online experience but I don't see Nintendo wading into those bloodied waters. They'll go more blue ocean - Even more for the female market / casual / mature (as in grandma) market.

That blue ocean will no longer be a blue ocean next gen. Sony and Ms now know that the female market/ casual/ grandparents market is a viable market and will waste no time trying to target them as well as the core. Thus Nintendo needs something for everyone too fps being the one genre they are ignoring.
And besides before Smash bros who would have thought nintendo would make a good fighting game. I know I didn't and they succeded by not following the crowd of one on one bloody animation but going pathing their own path. Veteran arcade fighters as well as casual player all flock to Smash bros.
I believe they could also have this kind of success with a Mario paint ball. It would inculde power ups and various antics that would really distinguish the game from the crowd. And parents would be more inclined to purchase the game for their children like how my parents bought Super Street fighter 2 for our snes but wouldn't get Mortal Kombat for our genesis even though they're both fighters which they didn't really want us to play.
If there's a more child friendly version of a genre with a popular face on it they will buy it and maybe try it out themselves.
