8.5 - like it less than III and V.

Just because Darth Vader kicks all kinds of ass.
9.0 ot of 10.
My fourth favorite Star Wars film. It was great, but had a couple of major flaws. Boba Fett's death was one of the most horrible things ever put on film and then there was the Ewoks. Worse than the Gungans - Yeah I said it. The Imperial army get's taken down by teddy bears that use sticks and stones. How stupid. James Cameron liked this idea though since he turned the Ewoks into blue monkeys and made the end of Avatar nearly identical to Return of the Jedi. Nature doesn't win over technology in real life. Chainsaw cuts down tree in real life.
The throne scene with Darth, the Emporer, and Luke was wicked though, and ranks amongst the greatest scenes in the series.

From my point of view, having started with A New Hope, Jedi was the last truly good Star Wars film. I'm going to review it as I saw it - i.e. unaltered with young Anakin, etc.
Pros
Nice continuation of Luke's character arc to become a Jedi
The Emperor & Darth Vader work well together
The 'temptation' scene
Rolicking Star Wars action still rooted solidly in the characters and their goals
Jabba the Hut
It wraps things up pretty well and there's a real sense of full on closure at the end
Another cracking film score from Williams.
Nicely handled final duel and resolution.
Vader funeral pyre.
Cons
Luke/Leia revelation feels very forced, really only existing to give Luke something he couldn't fail to be baited with by Vadar, rather than the oddly right feeling revelation in Empire about Luke/Vader's relationship.
Silly disposal of Bobba Fett - way to make a character a cool badass then play him as a bumbling incompetent.
While I don't hate the Ewoks after A New Hope / Empire there was the definate sense that some elements veered too far into out and out sillyness (and oh how prophetic that sense would turn out to be)
It feels a little rushed. Empire left everything so gloriously up in the air, with the whole Galaxy to be saved, and huge issues to be resolved for all our main characters, that in the end I always felt Jedi has to really rush to conclude some stuff. Han / Leia for example is really skimped over, and even Luke/Vader situation feels like more was required. More coverage of The Emperor the Sith and the Jedi would have helped too.
A probably inevitable sense of not quite hitting the high of Empire. But oh, if Lucas had knocked it out of the park again.
Mixed
I both really liked / somewhat disliked Vader death scene. I thought the concept and basic handling of the scene was good. But - perhaps inevitably - the man under the mask had little impact. Of course, given Lucas started the whole damn thing in the middle so that what should have been a huge unmasking really could only show a stranger, it couldn't be otherwise. In a way it sums up my view on the slight come-down from Empire to Jedi. In Empire you get that teasing shot of Vader's head from behind and your imagination goes wild, it was iconic and just grabbed your attention. In Jedi you see him from the front and it's just some guy you've never seen before. The music, Luke and the moment carry it, but it somewhat undermines the whole moment.
I guess Jedi is when it really became clear to me that certain aspects of the narrative could only remain unsatisfying or elusive because Lucas had skipped the films that would give them relevance and hadn't worked out - despite the indications in Empire that he might actually be able to - how to instead factor the additional needed backstory into the equation.
Mind you, I'd have preferred they remained skipped once I actually saw them.
Try to be reasonable... its easier than you think...

Flip 3 and 2 I think.
8/10 Ewoks were shit, Darth vs Luke lightsaber battle was awesome.

I loved Return of the Jedi and I still do.
The rescue of Han Solo
Luke back to Dagobah
The mission on Endor
The Father and son encounter
The suicide attack on the half built second death star... with another dramatic BANG!
About the Ewoks, yeah, I think tha this is when Lucas started to be tempted by the dark side (MONEY, MONEY, MONEY). Empire Strike Back was a kind of dark, dramatic, tragic adult movie... Where did the ships and the epic all out space battles go? I mean, maybe not the most suitable movie for a kid. Return of the Jedi, in the other hand, keeps the drama but adds lighter and funnier elements. To me, the Ewoks represent the kids watching the movie and being a huge part in defeating the empire. And of course the Star Wars Toys were sold like hot cakes. Remember playing Empire Strikes Back on the Atari?
So, what I am saying is that after the second success with Empire Strikes Back, Lucas started to think more commercially, trying to satisfy everyone with the third movie, and you know the rest of the movie. Episode I had a very young kid as a the main character, a Barbie Queen, Jar Jar, and so on. He said it once "One trilogy for the parents and another for the kids".
Return of the Jedi: 9.5 (Ewoks: -0.5 penalty)

Er, Empire Strikes Back > New Hope is already set. It says so in the OP.
I have no idea what the figure for Episode 6 is, but I would guess that it's in third place.
Oh dear, I haven't voted in this one.
Well, it was a fantastic movie, and a great end to the series. The Ewoks were a little sad, though, and it was no Empire Strikes Back.

Also, what was the point of the last battle? I mean, Luke SEEEMED to have won by tapping into his rage. Isn't that the exact antithesis of well... the entire trilogy? Shouldn't that of meant Luke was going to "fall" to the darkside? |
yeah he won by rage... but then laid down his weapon....
his real victory was having his father turn against the emperor, something not though possible once under the dark side. Luke didn't win by fighting, he won by gaining his father's compation. That's basically what his father tells him when he asks him to tell his sister that he was right about him.

This is my favorite movie in the SWs, cause luke is a jedi (though he does suck at the begining)... the 3 ways action at the end, the space battle, the planet battle and the emperor battle, chewie taking control of a walker and the ewoks never bothered me as I watched it as a tiny kid =) then later it got compensated by the bikini :-p
