Molyneux: “If I Made Something Like ICO, I’d Be Very Happy To Die”

POSTED NOVEMBER 12, 2010 BY LEWIS DENBY IN NEWS.

Peter Molyneux loved ICO. So much so, in fact, that he were to make something like it, he’d feel his time on this fair planet was done.

“You go back to that title and have a look at it – there were no icons on screen to speak of, the story was told in such an amazing way, it was told without language, it was incredibly iconic, the environment still is one of the most mystical, enchanting environments ever made, its gameplay with the hand-holding mechanic was brilliant,” he said.

“It broke every rule of gaming when you think it didn’t have tangible foes, it only introduced the baddie very late on, mystery was part of its mechanic, it didn’t have real power-ups or anything. It was genius and it still remains a work of genius.

“If I made something like ICO, I’d be very happy to die.”

His comments come in a feature, published on Eurogamer today, in which several renowned game designers discuss the titles that defined them as developers.

We reckon he’s already made a game that’s pretty much in ICO’s league, though. Fable III, which released recently, scored a whopping 9.5 out of 10 here at BeefJack.

i never originally played ico cant wait to try the hd remake, but i think it is fair enough to say that molyneux has made a special series in fable.

That guy talks too much. Seriously.

All of this, of course, is just my opinion.

Skyrim 100%'d. Dark Souls 100%'d.
Dark Souls > Skyrim.
Halo 4 is the best damn FPS since Halo 3.
Proud pre-orderer of 2 PS4's and an Xbox One.

Currently Playing: Dark Souls II, South Park
Playstation 4: MGS V GZ, Killzone: Shadow Fall, NBA 2k14.

i cant wait for the HD remake because i never tried these games T.T

I'd be very happy for him to die now.

Kidding, kidding. He gets more annoying every time he pulls the whole "I suck at making games, please pity me" thing, though.

Lol free advertising for Ico & SotC collection, at least he's useful for something.

I loled hard when I read the last sentence, how the hell can he compare ICO and Fable?! Seriously, from what I understood the comparison is based on the score, but that's completely stupid and gives us the feeling that he didn't understand what P.Molyneux was saying about Ico....

Well it could be worse he could be hyping up his games like no tomorrow and how they will change the industry.

wow!

in other news love ur sig! i can focus on two things now? left, right, left, right!

After reading the whole thing, from the source, I got stuck there:

Sean Murray is co-founder and managing director of Joe Danger developer Hello Games.

"I'd like to choose something really different that no one else is going to say, but I can't - the honest truth would be Mario 64. It's too obvious. Minecraft! Only now!

"But that's got to be for most people - Mario 64 is one of the greatest games ever made. The thing I always say about it is that it was the first proper 3D platformer I played and had seen, and the team that made it had never done a 3D game before. Imagine that they got everything right! That's amazing to me. And the rules they set down are set in stone now. For about 10 years afterwards everyone tried to do poorer versions of that."

On topic: I like how honest and heartfelt his comments are about Ico.  He's able to honestly praise the game even though he's now working with Sony's direct competitor.  I like the guy more and more, despite his over-enthusiasm at times. XD

Also, Fable III is awesome.  Not a really big leap above Fable II, but certainly as good as it was.  Which isn't a negative at all!

the amount of time i could have got this game is annoying me of every time i walked into a game shop i always picked up the box and looked at it and thought this game could be good and put it back down, that was like 4 years ago before i knew anything about game and havnt seen the game since
