Forums - Sales - Aaron Greenburg "LOL's" at VGChartz KINECT Sales Report on his Twitter!!!

You have to give the VGC folks a hands on going out on a limb to put these numbers out, and either way, they would have been flame bait.  If it was higher than the official tallies, they would get flamed by people on this very site, who are rushing to defend it now, but if it is too low, they get flamed by M$, Personally, I thought the number was a little lower than I expected, based solely on my specific geographical perspective, but overall, they looked pretty darn good to me.  The fact that Greenberg publicly came out so quickly to refute them in a backhanded way, means that Kinect probably did better but by how much?  5 months ago, if somebody had publicly stated that Kinect would launch and sell 500K in 3 days and push over 500K software units, they would have probably been flamed and laughed at on this VERY site.

your opinion.

Look at it this way:

VGC makes educated guesses. They aren't perfect, but they are very good. In fact, so good are they, that they are often more accurate than 90% of other trackers. VGC also does this for a very low cost, hell, a few months ago, they did it FOR FREE. Do you know how much NPD charges for their data, and do you know that they also use guesstimates and that perfect tracking is impossible due to small business?

Lemme put it in a way you might more understand. NPD is a ps3 at launch, and VGC is a wii at launch. Everyone mocks VGC... but really, VGC holds its own against the big boys.

Ehhh my opinion was that everyone mocks VGC....which they really do so its more of a fact.

Your opinion = "VGchartz just make up the numbers. Which to be fair most of the time they do."

kthxbye

Except they actually do which is the reason why people mock the site.

He would have no reason to comment unless he knew with a pretty high certainty that vgchartz numbers were wrong.

As to how he knows their wrong we don't know and can only speculate. Maybe they already received initial sales figures from NPD, maybe the have their own internal tracking for Kinect who knows. All I can tell you is that his sources are probably a lot more accurate than ours.

Maybe. Maybe not. You're right though... We can only speculate.

Maybe he's just wound up and upset that VGC posted sales numbers for it before MS actually did.

Perhaps but the way he worded the tweet I highly doubt thats the case.

In the end all we can do is wait for some official number and see if vgchartz has to adjust or not. Seeing as there have been some major adjustments after every holiday period that I can recall I'm not going to put too much thought into the next few weeks sales results, although it will be fun to see vgchartians getting their panties all up in a bunch like they do every time the sales landscape gets shaken up a bit.

We get it. You hate this site almost as much as Greenberg.

Shut up already.

Do you really think wholesalers have no methods of tracking sales of product at retail, in general?

As for this specific case, one easy way would be restocking orders from retailers.  M$ knows how many were shipped, so if Retailers are clamoring for follow-on orders to be filled faster...that's probably a clue.  Every been to a best buy, and they could tell you which nearby stores had the item sold out at the store you're at...that might be a clue.

So your argument is that MS has at least the same tracking capacity as vgchartz doe, and therefore has been tracking than vgc does.

Restocking has no implication on sales.

Shipments do not directly go to each store (surprisingly /sarcasm) they go to a warehouse or distributor. Once the product leaves the MS manufactory, they have no idea, nor do they care, what happens to them. All they care about is sending out more shipments and selling them.

Restocking has no implication on sales.

Wait...are you telling me that if a retailer order doubles the initial launch order, that is NOT indicative of retail sales?

that depends on your definition of "make up"  If it means that the numbers are not 100% tracked and have to be extrapolated based on the data obtained then I can't think of a tracking site that doesn't make up numbers.  If that's not your definition then you're lying or do not know how the tracking on the site works.

*scratches head*

this is a huge improvement in how you were just posting.

Anyway, I think the numbers are good. And I think Greenberg is just trying to be like "HAHA VGC are fools! Hey everyone, Kinect is doing WAY BETTER than 500k, YEAH!! LET'S ALL GO BUY KINECTS!!"

He's a PR guy. He's paid to make Kinect look good. If insulting vgc is part of that job, then that's what he'll do. He could just be trolling us, and completely non-work related. But I dunno. Pretty big coincidence, I'd say.

No reliable implication.

What if a shipment sinks to the bottom of the Hudson River? Companies have insurance on shipping, so all they have to do is order more. That shipment didn't actually get sold, and MS simply do not care.

I'm not saying trucks are exploding or getting hijacked at rest-stops, or abducted by aliens, and all sorts of nonsense. I'm saying that (and this I wrote in the post as well) it cannot be reliable because of small business. There are lots of small businesses out there that order units and then never sell them. Or use them themselves, or anything.

You were so very creative in thinking up ways that MS could track things using clues. Be creative now, so I don't have to spell it out for you. Not every shipped unit gets sold. All MS cares about is "shipped". However, they do use NPD in order to tell how popular their goods are, but other than that, they give 0 fuks.
