Forums - Nintendo - What if Nintendo remakes this?

Next Nintendo console could be simply called NES, again. Simple, catchy and many people actually know it.

Some companies remake old games, but Nintendo would be the first(?) to remake and update a memorable piece of hardware from the 80's into modern day standards, using the exact same name. Bringing freshness and something disruptive once again like they did back in the time. With Nostalgia instead of a new name.

I'd love it!

Huh

That actually warms the cockles of my heart

I'm guessing you mean remake it with HD graphics and motion controls or else nobody would buy it.

I think this would be a bad idea. Anybody remember what happened to Sega when they named Sonic 360/PS3 as Sonic The Hedgehog, everyone was pissed. If Nintendo failed to deliver an excellent system it would mire the NES's name. Not to mention the fact that Nintendo has come up with new names every generation unlike Sony. Its a large selling point for Nintendo.

Think for example if Nintendo remade the GameCube nobody would buy it because of the name even if the console rocked. If they remade the NES and it wasn't a legit remake of the NES some consumers would be pissed.

Besides sales wise the Nintendo logo will sell any console they market at a profit. Why use an old name?

Same reason they won't sell it as Wii2 or SuperWii, because consumers who own a Wii won't buy it and consumers who disliked Wii won't buy it. Same goes for NES

Sony and Microsoft gamimg divisions would go bankrupt!

Above: still the best game of the year.

Hmm, it is an interesting concept but I'm not sure how it would work in execution. When companies remake games or movies or whatever, they can usually make a number of callbacks to the original, and take a back to the basics approach removing some of the complications that have been added in more recent releases. But I'm not sure what besides some gimmicky similar aesthetics could make a current system similar to the NES. In name only I'm not sure what good it would do or what the point would be.

At the same time I would definitely be interested in the strategy behind a decision to remake a console.

Also I have to think an NES remake would be more appropriate about getting back your former glory after a console like the Gamecube, not coming off a console even more successful than the NES (Wii).

Of course, the only thing similar would be the name.

It would be whatever Nintendo comes up with, hardware wise for the next console.

they should Driv3r it and call it N3S

Maybe they'll just name it Ultra NES.

That'd  be sweet.
