The one thing that is pissing me off about Minecraft is that if enemies catch you up against a wall they can kill you in seconds.  I don't want to lose 15 iron and 40 coal, and I don't want to have to go back to base every minute, and I REALLY don't want to have to completely clear the massive cave system before mining anything. 

The worst part of it is that I had huge amounts of health items on me, even equipped in my taskbar -- it just happened so fast I didn't have the chance to use them. 

Fucking ninja zombie dropped from darkness above me and killed me without announcing himself!

You should've just punched him when he was on top of you tea bagging, like I do with spiders. >_>

I did but he killed me anyway.  It was in single player so maybe I'll play Peaceful until I can get back the iron supplies that MYSTERIOUSLY DISAPPEARED from my furnace when the beta update happened.

yea... they completly reworked how the inventory is handeled.... should lead to less losses in the future... prior to it, on servers sometimes ovens would just eat everything... or duplicate all of it.....

I think what actually happened might have been that the game forgot some stuff I did, because I found an area that seems exactly like an area that I'd already mined, but it was unexplored.  I'm much happier about that because it means the iron wasn't simply lost (except the stuff I lost when I died later, but oh well). 

But I have a question about the multiplayer:  The last couple times I tried to play, it wouldn't let me dig.  I found some clay I want to dig, but when I do, it pops right back into existence in the ground.  I waited a few minutes to see if the game was just laggy while I was starting to play, but it kept happening.  What is going on?

It's the server that can't keep up for some reason. Bad connection maybe, or something like that.

Speaking of which, I just tried again and it said "Disconnected by server -- outdated client!"

Then either your version of Minecraft is outdated (unlikely since it updates automatically) or the server is obsolete, and whoever is running it needs to download a new version from the official web page.

I started playing just before the December 20th deadline to get all the updates for free.  Seems pretty interesting so far.

Someone mentioned the best place to mine is just above the bedrock.  Is that where you can't dig any deeper?  I haven't hit that yet.

Yes, the rocks will look very different (darker) and you will be totally incapable of digging through them.  However, the bedrock is not uniform, i.e. you may find a piece at one level and around it the bedrock is lower or higher etc.  But that general depth will be the rock bottom of that portion of the map. 

I'm not totally sure you were told truth, though.  I'm certainly no expert, and as a general rule deeper is better, but I don't know if plowing all the way to bedrock is necessarily going to be better than the standard lava depth.  (Note that lava can sometimes be very shallow or on the surface, but there is definitely a depth IMO that lava likes better.)

But for all I know, that may be absolutely true advice.
