yea... they completly reworked how the inventory is handeled.... should lead to less losses in the future... prior to it, on servers sometimes ovens would just eat everything... or duplicate all of it.....

I think what actually happened might have been that the game forgot some stuff I did, because I found an area that seems exactly like an area that I'd already mined, but it was unexplored.  I'm much happier about that because it means the iron wasn't simply lost (except the stuff I lost when I died later, but oh well). 

But I have a question about the multiplayer:  The last couple times I tried to play, it wouldn't let me dig.  I found some clay I want to dig, but when I do, it pops right back into existence in the ground.  I waited a few minutes to see if the game was just laggy while I was starting to play, but it kept happening.  What is going on? 

It's the server that can't keep up for some reason. Bad connection maybe, or something like that.
