Forums - Nintendo - Mario 3D: Two Players?

Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was a port of Super Mario Bros. to the Game Boy Colour, with the addition of some of the levels from Super Mario Bros. 2 (Japan) and also a mode called You vs. Boo.

You were given a long stage where you would race a Boo along it, with things like flip blocks and enemies in your way. Boo got faster every time you beat it.

Mario vs Luigi just reminded me of it, i.e. Nintendo has done it before and it worked quite well.

Time to Work !

What 2D two-player games are you talking about? The main series 2D games had alternating multiplayer, not simultaneous.

It would be cool if they made either a game around the idea of online mario coop where both players are required to solve platforming puzzles etc....but as a main series Mario game? it wouldn't get the attention it would need to be any good.

No, no, no. The next 3D Mario platformer would be played by either one player, or two player. Go online. Race to get the star, in any level, first. Split screen. It has to work.

well then that would be more like a race then platforming

It would be optional, in the game. The whole game wouldn't be like that. You would get the grand, one player, experience, but if there happens to be two players, you could play this two player mode. Better than the two-player mode we have in Galaxy, where the other person simply gets the stars. And it will still be more like a platformer, than a race, like Sonic R.

Yeah, but that's in a 2D game...

I am talking about 3D two-player Mario platformers, not 2D. Did Super Mario 64 DS have this two player feature?

Guys, its not that hard. Rember sonic adventure 2 battle? It would be like the racing mode, only in mario levels. Also, no weird powerups, and the levels would be the same as normal. Though I do have a few questions:
1. what about warp pipes?
2. can the players interact with each other (like in NSMB)?

I meant that in your original post, you mentioned that "we had them for 2D, not 3D". I had forgotten about the Mario vs. Luigi mode in NSMB, and the other main 2D games in the series only have alternating multiplayer, not simultaneous competitive multiplayer.

Super Mario 64 DS actually has a four-player mode in the style that you describe, which makes use of re-purposed maps from the main game in which players compete to obtain stars the quickest. I only played it briefly (and traded the game in later on, due to the lack of analog control totally ruining the game), but it was kind of fun.

I made that suggestion on GameFAQs months ago. and I really like that idea. Mario vs. Luigi! A reac to collect 1, 3, 5, 7, 10 or 15 stars!
