Forums - Gaming - Why third party core games fail(ed) on the Wii

Part of the problem is that I have never ever seen an advert, outside in ONM, for a 'core' 3rd party Wii game.  While Bayonetta got tonnes of ads on TV and on gaming sites, I didn't see a single on for Madworld anywhere.  Here in the U.K, Dark Void sponsored a fairly major TV show on one of the most popular channels, while I saw no ads for Resident Evil UC, DC, Okami and only a few in ONM for Zack and Wiki.  MH3 is the only Capcom game to really get ads here in the U.K for Wii and it was Nintendo that was behind that.

I could go on for much longer, but I think one gets the picture

so i'm an "upmarket" gamer now?  okay, whatever.  a name is a name.  so as a representitive of upmarket gaming let me layout a few of my priorities.

HD is better than SD I have an HD TV and I've come to really like it. I pay my extra $5 or whatever it is a month to upgrade my netflix package to include blu-rays simply because not-blurry is always better than blurray.

Graphics is important  This topic has many facites to consider but I want something pretty to look at.  Polygon count certainly fits into this as does art style.   But imo, no matter the art style more pow3r leads to better graphics.  Let me tell you, Mario Galaxy would be a better game if it's graphics looked like Ratchet and Clank's.  (just a game that is in a somewhat simular art style as an example).

Unified online system is great  This is one of those things that I never thought was important until I got it but I love the unified online system of the ps360.  Trophies and Achievments add so much fun to a game as it give me that extra incentive to really play the hell out of the games i like.  Being able to see if my friends are online or not, send them messages to get them to play a game together, online co-op.  All of it is great!

Controls Inputs  Motion controls are great but i love my standard controller too.  What I can't stand are controls that impresise (i.e. games where no matter how I play the game I get the same result on the screen also known as waggle).  What I like more than anything is a wide range of experiences so don't force motion controlls where it isn't needed and do motion controlls when it make the game more better.

Unique Concepts  Don't get me wrong I love me some sequels but I want fresh takes in new and sometimes even akward directions.  Just a few examples of games that really impressed me with their daring this gen: wii sports, heavy rain, echochrome, flower, boom blox, demon souls.  Taking a chance to satisfy a niche market instead of always going after safe games really impresses me.  it lends a certain amount of "good will" to whoever delivers it.

So what you may notice on this list, is from a strickly hardware perspecive Nintendo can't deliver on many of my priorites.  for me,  at the start of this gen nintendo had a win in the controls inputs but the more i played the more and more disappointed i got in what could be done.  especially now that ps has move and kinect is about to come out nintendo is definetly looseing this section.

I know most of you will probably just write off my opinions as i am a ps3 fanboy and all but don't forget that when I first started posting here (just after the wii released) i was a huge nintendo fanboy.  thing is, i like good games better than bad games so i move to where the best of the best is and in all honestly it isn't wii games.

For me:   hd first party > hd third party > wii first party > wii third party

I still think Nintendo fans put way to much crap on third parties and not enough on Nintendo's part in all of this. I'd go on a rant, but I can't be bothered arguing for 3 pages with three different people about something I don't really care about.

Oh, I think there's plenty of blame to go around, and Nintendo definitely deserves their share.  They should be pushing harder for content, for exclusives, and doing more to support 3rd parties in general beyond the few "favored nation" partner projects (ie: MH3, DQIX, Layton, etc)... ultimately it really is Nintendo fault if there's a lack of content on their machines.

There is no debate.

Ask anyone who isn't a forum dweller and they will tell you...

"I get the Nintendo/Mario games and stuff, but the Wii doesn't really have any good games." - Common person

The 3rd party games are terrible and terribly advertised, period. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. 98% of all Wii 3rd party titles have been made by the worst of teams with the worst of intentions.

This is not overexaggeration or hyperbole, it is absolute fact. I've been looking at the Wii getting dicked of good games for 4 years now and this is the inconvenient truth.

3rd parties don't want to support the console. On the PS3/360, they have free reign- Sony & MS first parties presence is fairly minimal so the inmates run the asylum. On the Wii, they would have to actually pull of something somewhat original and not have to rely on graphcial fidelity alone to get their poorly constructed game concepts out there. I own all the consoles and I enjoy every one of them, but all these "hardcore games" that people swear by and jerk off to are just trashy games in shiny clothing.

To end it here I will reiterate, 3rd parties have been near worthless on the Wii. If their games were good, people would buy their games like they buy the Nintendo ones. Name your favorite "AA-AAA" 3rd party Wii games and I can give you the laundry list of careless flaws behind them all.

Normally, I don't like to post stuff that doesn't really add anything, but I think you have the best non-OP post of the thread.

In other words, /topic really.

It's interesting, because I'm really looking forward to Sonic Colors and Epic Mickey this holiday season. These two titles, from what I can see, have had development teams that have put time, effort, and dedication into their respective games.

I mean, we have Epic Mickey, a game developed by Warren Spector and his team at Junction Point Studios. This game has obviously had a lot of hard work and dedication put into it, and everyone has taken notice. Heck, every week or so we get a new interview with Warren with a question or two on why the game isn't coming to their HD system of choice.

And then we have Sonic Colors, the new Sonic game that Sega will just not shut up about. I have to admit, it's refreshing to see a publisher/developer talk about their upcoming 3rd party Wii game with such high regard. We usually get a situation where the developer lauds the HD consoles, and then a few months later (if Wii fans are lucky) announces a Wii port with little to no fanfare (see: Call of Duty). I for one am excited for Sonic Colors, and apparently Sega is excited too... which makes me a lot more confident in my future purchase (the awesome Sonic hat doesn't hurt either).

Did Nintendo kick your dog or something. o_O

cause among those 70m of Wii owners

probably 60m is nintendo fans plus non gamer user

left around 10m is really game lover which not only go for nintendo software

but most important is Wii don't really able to produce very impressed games

There are 60m "Nintendo fans"?!  Where were they last gen? :/

According to Nielsen, 70% of Wii owners also had a PS2.  I think there are plenty of "core gamers" who have held on to their Wiis, but they only buy Nintendo's games for the most part anymore.

Piracy's becoming more and more of an issue too (as it did on DS/PSP for core games), Wii's by far the easiest console to pirate (you don't even need a Wii at this point to do it, just a Wiimote for control) and core games tend to (proportionately) get the worst ratios for pirating.  It's funny that the most vocal gaming segment are also likely the worst offenders when it comes to piracy...

lol - don't have a dog but they didn't kick my cat either.    ..but after being a long time nintendo fan (nes, gameboy, snes, n64, gc, wii, ds) and investing soo much into a wii (wii, extra wii mote, extra nunchuck, balance board, classic controller, 2x motion plus, recharging station) i had certain expectations.  nintendo let me down big time this gen and now i'm bitter.

I dunno, as a Nintendo fan I'd say they've delivered with their own games at least, even if some aren't quite as universally loved as last gen (Smash Bros., Metroid, Animal Crossing) and there are yet some glaring omissions (Pikmin, F-Zero, Star Fox).  On the other hand, we've also had revivals that skipped last gen entirely (Excite, Punch Out, S&P, 2D Mario/Kirby/DK), franchises that matched or exceeded last gen quality wise (Mario, Zelda, Mario Kart, Fire Emblem) and the amazing Virtual Console (which is still pound for pound the best DD service in terms of quality content). The problem is really almost everyone else, they've treated Wii like it was still in GameCube's position, rather than PS2's...

In fact none of them are, unless you count Mario Kart and NSMB, which I don't.

You don't find Mario Kart or NSMB to be core games? What are core games in your opinion?

If you ask me (you don't), they are not core AT ALL. In fact, not by miles. Those games lost their 'core status' (lol) when Ninty started catering to casuals and their 'new' audience instead of us 'old timers'... I don't know how anyone could call Ninty games 'core' anymore. In my opinion, most have gone the way of the casual with dumbed down gameplay. They have become ruined franchises... At least that's what I think, however, millions seems to disagree with my sentiment. Maybe it's just me getting older, and getting somewhat sick of the 'more of the same' feeling I get surrounding many Ninty titles. In my opinion, Super Mario Galaxy 1, Super Paper Mario and Metroid: Prime 3 are the only three Ninty games I have enjoyed this gen. However, Galaxy is the only title I feel I must have on the Wii. The once great franchises like SSB, Mario Party, Mario Kart and Zelda have not been the same on the Wii at all. These are franchises I have played EXTENSIVELY since their birth/creation. Games me and my friends have played for years, every single day. We never touch their Wii versions... Never... Their magic is simply gone (to me (and my friends) that is)... Feel free to disagree, I feel you will.
