A friend has all their songs and I listened to move of them. They weren't bad but I don't get what all the fuss is about

They're decent, but waaay over rated for sure.
B-but if it wasn't for Nirvana we wouldn't have the Foo Fighters...
It's kind of hard to explain why they were so good. It's a bit like the Sex pistols, who are considered one of, if not the greatest, punk band of all time. There have been better punk bands. There have been punk bands who have achieved more. But the Sex Pistols just had that novel edge that made them become part of the culture a little better than the others.
Nirvana are kind of the same. They weren't the best grunge band around, but the had the novel edge that etched them into the culture of the 90's a little better than the rest of the grunge bands.
The quality's kind of hard to describe.
“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”
- George Orwell, ‘1984’
It is the ultimate state of human consciousness. It is heaven on Earth.
...Oh, the band. I think they're pretty average, to be honest.
I've asked myself and others the same question. Everyone tells me Kurt was a great song writer, but come on. His lyrics are garbage, his singing is horrible, and he can't play guitar worth a crap. Speakin' of guitar. Guitar World has "Smells Like Teen Spirit" at #26 for top 100 guitar solos. Are you kidding me???
I don't think I'll ever understand why Nirvana gets so much credit. Maybe cause he died at a young age?
They are crap.
Its what happened when music labels realized the heavy metal bands are getting out of control and are selling more than their manufactured boy bands. Metallica, Megadeth, GNR, Skid Row, Slayer, Pantera were all dominating the music charts and those bands wrote their own music so labels couldn't give them 5 cents for every CD sold.
Out comes nirvana(and pearl jam), an average bar band...with shorter hair, tamer music, dress code that homeless people can follow and huge marketing push. Kids eat it up...Nirvana was basically the hair metal band of the 80's...just in the 90s...bluprint which struck temporary success and was copied by everyone...Setting the hard rock movemebt back 15 years.
Fast forward 3 years later to 1996 and metal bands can't get airplay, grunge bands all suck and don't sell anymore and hip hop, backstreet boys, Britney and Nsync are all you can hear on MTV.

I don't know, I'd rather have some dude sing about having a party and a good time...even if he looks like a chick... than have some no talent loser write 3 minute songs about substance abuse and how world sucks.

If you think about it that's the music that we have now.
Personally Nirvana is one of my favorite bands ever. I think Kurt Cobain was something of a poet but then again it could've just been the drugs.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.
